Kaya Mawa, Lake Malawi

Looking out over sun-dappled waters from endless shorelines, it would be easy to think you are holed up on some far-off archipelago. Not so. Tucked away on Likomo Island, Kaya Mawa makes for the perfect hideaway destination, without even leaving the wilds of the African continent. Surrounded by the crystal clear waters of Lake Malawi, the 12 villas of Kaya Mawa are an unrivalled beach paradise in this land-locked country. Spend your days above, below or on the water before the most picture-perfect sundowners you could imagine and dinner beneath the stars.

Location

Set on the south-western tip of Likoma Island in the far north-east of Lake Malawi, getting to Kaya Mawa can be an adventure in itself. For an authentic Malawian experience, why not catch the local ferry? Taking 36hrs to reach the island, with a few stops along the way, it always makes for an interesting journey and is guaranteed to produce a few stories. But there’s always the one hour light aircraft flight if you’d prefer. A tiny island that packs a punch, Likoma is a friendly place, perfect for exploring. Navigate your way through thick mango trees, along pristine sandy beaches and into hidden coves before checking out the vast St. Peter’s Cathedral and catching a local football match.

Your Room

Stunningly unique, each of the twelve villas at Kaya Mawa has been individually designed in partnership with a local textiles workshop, set up to empower single mothers, and reflect the island’s laid back vibes whilst maintaining a chic feel. Boasting private terraces, mahogany four poster beds and panoramic lake views – each villa is as gorgeous as the last. So which one will it be? Makengulu on its own bougainvillea covered island? Msekwa perched on the lake’s crystal clear waters? Or how about the four bedroom Ndomo House with its own private beach? No matter which option you go for, you’ll be playing castaway in utter style and tranquility.

Why we like it

Kaya Mawa is a true escape from reality in every sense – including taste. After all, why eat in a restaurant when you can choose from any other location on the island? At Kaya Mawa, dinner is wherever you want it to be. So, whether that’s with your toes in the sand or in an overwater gazebo, you can guarantee a memorable meal. It’s not just about where you eat though, but what you eat. The kitchen prides itself on serving fresh, healthy and innovative cuisine using local organic produce, handpicked herbs and fresh lake fish. No matter, how you spend your days, you can guarantee a delicious meal to end them.
