The Hotel at Tharabar Gate

Tradition meets luxurious comfort  at Tharabar Gate with an air of understated elegance blended perfectly with oriental mysticism. Stepping into this boutique bolthole reminds us of entering an age of colonial rule where a master of the manor would not seem out of place. The inviting outdoor swimming pool is guarded by miniature stone elephants that line the waters edge whilst dinner is a rather special event with the option of either al fresco dining in the French garden or a more formal banquet in the Ananada restaurant.

Just a 70 minute flight from Yangon lays the legendary 10th century city of Bagan, once the ancient capital of the Burmese Empire. The hotel at Tharabar gate is only 15 minutes from the airport and stands majestically in front of the magnificent city gates. We think this is the perfect place to make your base for exploring the nearby temples and pagodas of Bagan (including the famous Ananada Temple).

Your room

All 84 rooms and suites blend subtly into the mature tropical gardens and provide a real  sense of privacy and tranquillity. Quintessentially Burmese in design and decor, your room features its own little private garden; a cool shady spot for an afternoon with a cocktail and a good book. Inside, comfort is very much at the fore with huge sink-into beds, traditional Burmese tapestries adorning the walls and dark wooden floors.

Why we like it

Any boutique hotel that houses a genuine section of a 12th century palace wall in its grounds is fine by us. Add in the 24 hour butler service, comfy loungers around the pool and the stunning back drop of a giant 12th century pagoda and you know we are big fans.
