Clarion Post Hotel, Gothenburg

Where high-design meets 1920’s history, Clarion Post Hotel has transformed the space of the old Drottningtorget post office into a hugely exciting, conceptual city stay. With all the features that you might expect from a luxurious city bolthole, but maximized by the innovative design that Sweden is so famed for. Think atmospheric lighting installations, sunken pools and bespoke artwork (crushed panels of an old post van will welcome you from the walls on arrival), all seamlessly working with the building’s historic neoclassical architecture.

location

The Clarion Post Hotel is located in the heart of Gothenburg city, easily visible from the streets with its dual façade, half-covered in slate, half in copper, to mimic the materials previously used to build the grandiose old post office. The stately building lies adjacent to Central Station and acts as a flagship for the ‘new’ Gothenburg; mirroring the city’s transformation into a burgeoning cultural hub alive with contemporary art, design-led architecture and fashionable boutiques. With the Clarion Post as your base, exploring this energetic city could not be easier, that’s if you can tear yourself away from the opulent furnishings and high-tech details of this revered space.

your room

Highly innovative aspects of design are evident throughout the room interiors, weaving high-tech features into the sumptuous bedrooms in the form of iPod docks and large, flat-screen TV’s in a mix of convenience, comfort and contemporary design. We should emphasise the ‘convenience’ element of the rooms, with the TV’s inbuilt social media access and web browsing facilities coupled with the oversized, cushion-scattered beds making the move into an upright position a feat in itself.

why we like it

We love the idea of discovery and the Clarion Post’s mix of open-plan spaces, low-lit rooms and hidden corners make getting lost in this vast building an enticing prospect.  The Post Bar with its sophisticated interior consisting of mismatched sofas and intriguing slanted bookcases that scale the walls is well worthy of an extended post-meal stay. So too is the rich, sumptuously decorated Norda Bar & Grill that, headed up by acclaimed chef Marcus Samuelsson, offers some of Gothenburg’s finest fare in a Scandinavian meets East Coast American menu.
