The 21c Museum Louisville is a masterwork of cutting-edge design and suave Southern style. This boutique bolthole doubles as an art gallery in its spare time, so as well as a chic place to stay it’s also a cultural hub and home to an award-winning restaurant, Proof on Main—the whole package, really. If that all sounds a bit exhausting, don’t worry, the custom massages in the spa are second to none.
You won’t have far to go in your cultural pursuits when you’re a resident at the 21c. This hotel couldn’t be more central if it tried, sitting right in the middle of the downtown district, on a street which has been dubbed one of America’s ‘Top Ten Great Streets’. Stroll over on a summer night to LouVino, listed countless times as the best wine bar in Kentucky. And if you’re feeling a little worse for wear in the morning, Hillbilly Tea have got you covered with their Deluxe Brunch (we won’t spoil the surprise, but the skillet pancakes are sublime).
Rooms in this renovated tobacco and bourbon warehouse are now modern art-filled sanctuaries, designed by renowned architect Deborah Berke. Think exposed original brickwork and unique artistry, high ceilings and huge windows. We love the little touches, like pewter mint julep cups in every room. You’ll also have the rare chance to sleep inside an artwork. New York-based artists Freeman and Lowe have created a site-specific sculptural installation that also poses as one of the hotel rooms. The eclectic multi-colored glass panels that serve as a ceiling are strangely mesmerising.
Why we like it
More than just a gimmick, this haven will leave you feeling genuinely inspired as well as refreshed. The best bit though is the room service provided by the inspired chefs at Proof on Main – your own chefs on call. Oh and the spa treatments, which you can also enjoy in the comfort of your room. The 21c Museum Hotel has it all.
