Your Fort Worth Weekend

We’ve no idea how the residents of Fort Worth get through the working week knowing how the town comes alive at the weekend. We’re pretty sure there’s some serious clock watching going on in all nearby offices, but who can blame them? These people live in one of the world’s most exciting weekend hotspots. From Honky Tonk to cattle drive to music performance to lively bar, 5:30pm on a Friday afternoon never sounded so good. There’s a few goings on in particular that we just can’t get enough of here at Black Tomato, so we’ve compiled the perfect add-on weekend itinerary. So, get reading and start imagining a weekend like no other. Texas style.

Billy Bob’s Texas

Although it’s open all week, there’s no denying that Billy Bob’s is best on a weekend, and if you’re already in weekend mode by Thursday, be sure to sign yourself up to a line dancing class. You’ll have the two-step down to a T in no time. Upping the tempo, Friday and Saturday nights see professional bull riders take to the indoor arena for a rodeo spectacular. There’s nothing quite like watching these daring cowboys expertly riding those bucking bulls, often narrowly escaping their sharp horns by a hairs breadth. An adrenaline pumping experience, you’ll be quite ready for a stiff drink when it’s all over. Still, if you’re not keen on watching the bull riding, there are plenty of other things you can enjoy in this 100,000 square foot establishment. How about a spot of authentic live country music from Billy Bob’s house band? Live music is a huge part of the weekend culture here (big names like Willie Nelson regularly take to the stage) so you’re bound to get a taste for country music whilst you’re in town. It’s a truly Texan and raucous affair every weekend at Billy Bob’s – which is exactly why you should go.

White Elephant Saloon

Everyone in Fort Worth knows the White Elephant Saloon. It’s one of the town’s most legendary drinking establishments; centrally located, authentic and with an interesting history to boot (apparently the last Wild West gunfight happened here); you don’t want to pass up an opportunity to enjoy a beverage or two in this place. On the weekend the saloon really comes to life as people hit the wooden dance floor to the beat of live music. Decked out with pool tables, a shuffleboard table and even a boot shine stand, White Elephant couldn’t be any more authentic if it tried. What’s more, it’s said the bar is haunted by Longhair Jim, one of Fort Worth’s most corrupt law men. Welcome to a real slice of Texas y’all.

Cowtown Coliseum

Located in the heart of the Fort Worth Stockyards, the Cowtown Coliseum hosts some of the town’s most exciting events every Friday and Saturday. With well over three thousand seats in this multi-purpose arena, you could be watching anything from classic rodeo to lasso demonstrations. This is most definitely the place to go if you want to come face to face with real life cowboys.  We loved watching the games played on horseback as the cowboys ride their horses around a series of obstacles at a breath-taking pace. Get down there early and grab some food before you settle into your seat for an incredible show. The sheer number of spectators that come each weekend makes for an electric atmosphere and you’ll go home with plenty of stories to tell.

Sundance Square

After all that cowboy action, you’ll no doubt be looking for a calmer and more refined side to Fort Worth. Make your way down to Sundance Square and you’ll have to look no further. Overflowing with dining options that range from a casual burger to gourmet cuisine as well as an endless array of cocktail bars and nightclubs, there’s enough choice here to suit your every need. Out for a quiet evening of delicious food and wine? Head over to Ferre Ristorantee and enjoy top class Tuscan cuisine and wine as well as a truly wonderful ambience. For those of you looking for something a bit livelier, Cabo Grande serves up perfectly executed Mexican dishes in a truly exciting atmosphere. If you’re looking to wash all of that delicious food down with a drink, there’s a plethora of Jazz bars, sports bars, cocktail bars and nightclubs, too. That’s your weekend sorted, then.
