Vegas to L.A: the ultimate road trip

It’s no big secret that we at Black Tomato love the freedom of the open road, so the time has arrived to rent some wheels and complete the most enviable road trip going. Start things in the bright lights of the ultimate showman – Las Vegas, before cruising south to the ever-so-fashionable Palm Springs. After basking in the Cali desert sunshine end this 10 day epic adventure by traveling west to the desirable zip code of Newport Beach. This is one luxury vacation you won’t want to speed through. Ready – set – drive.

Legendary for its illustrious hotels, infamous strip and a gambling scene like no other, Vegas has to be one of our favorites. Arriving in Nevada you’ll be whisked from McCarran Internation Airport by private car to your new home for the next three nights, (and probably the most iconic of them all) the Bellagio. Grand on every scale and with 24/7 service, we assure you’ll slot right into the Vegas way of life.

Over the next three days take some time to explore the strip and all it has to offer. Weave in and out of the surrounding hotels, from New York-New York to the Luxor, store till you drop at The Forum in Caesars Palace, or dabble in a spot of money-making (be it playing with quarters or joining the high rollers) at the MGM Grand. Top of our list and not to be missed is the Grand Canyon. Soar high into the sky and admire the panoramic views of this natural wonder. If your nerves are under control take a walk on the steep side and strut along the Grand Canyon Skywalk – a horse shoe shaped path suspended 4000 feet about the canyon floor.

Leaving Sin City in the rear-view mirror (what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas right?), it’s time to take the gentle four hour cruise through the stunning Joshua Tree National Park before arriving at relaxing Palm Springs. Home to 70s retro ways it showcases the peak of old Hollywood glamour, where pool parties are the norm and cocktails are a key ingredient to any great decision.

Hole up for four nights in the über-luxurious Viceroy Palm Springs, the perfect spot to unwind and completely indulge in some much needed you time. Take refuge in one of their secluded cabanas poolside and request a private massage or pedicure. For an afternoon escape, check yourself into a yoga session at the exotic Korakia Pensione. They have a specially designed sun deck which helps release your inner Zen. Set in the heart of Palm Springs, just footsteps away from the main street of North Palm Canyon Drive you can sample their favorite TexMex menus in no time. The street is bursting with an abundance of restaurants and bars, you’ll never be hungry. A must is to wander the VillageFest, a downtown festival with more than 200 stalls offering beautiful art, handcrafted jewellery and sumptuous food.

Release your inner culture vulture by paying Palm Springs Art Museum a visit. It’s famous for its extrovert art work, the majority of which has been donated by Palm Springs stars. Discover the 28 weird and wonderful galleries and marvel at the sculpture gardens. For something a little faster paced hop on a desert Jeep and tour the local area, or traverse your way to the San Andreas fault line and witness the geographical wonder of the tectonic plates that California is famous for. To cap off your time in Palm Springs, take the Aerial Tramway at sunset for spectacular views over the whole of Palm Springs and deep into the Coachella Valley.

After intoxicating sleepless nights in Vegas to the spa retreats in Palm Springs, it’s time to relax true Cali style. So grab your keys, head ninety minutes west, and you’ll arrive at the super wealthy Newport Beach. A fantastic coast line and an affluent harbor will be your surroundings for your final three days.

As you are in iconic California, you must do as the locals do – which involves some serious beach time. After passing countless surf stores along Balboa Street, you’ll get the hint to head to the ocean. Dabble in a day’s surf lesson or charter a private yacht to catch a view of the 10 mile stretch of beach coast line. These last few days are at your leisure so kick back and drift into the Newport way of life.

All road trips eventually come to an end, so as you rev the engine one last time for the quick drive to LAX, reflect on the epic journey you’ve made. And remember it’s never too soon to start planning the next trip. It’ll pass the time on the flight home.
