Tell us a bit about who you are and what you do…
Well, I am a songwriter, singer, and performer, but I like to think that what I do for a living is to be the best version of myself in front of people.
What inspired you to work in the music industry?
I really just wanted to start telling stories. I started writing poetry when I was in high school. Around the same time I started playing guitar. It made sense to me to start putting it together and write songs. I started playing open mics, then started a band with my brother and some friends in the Tarleton State University jazz band. The rest is history I suppose.
Would you say Fort Worth has a strong music scene?
Fort Worth has a very strong music scene. I would say it is definitely in the top 10 in the country, but there is so much talent that comes from Fort Worth then they head to Nashville, New York, Austin, and LA, rather than staying here. If we came together as a community in a way that we could keep the best here and work on attracting more talent from other places I think we could have something to rival Nashville and LA.
Where’s best to hear live music in Fort Worth?
There are lots of great places to see live music, but Magnolia Motor Lounge has is the most consistent. Live music seven nights a week and all of incredible caliber. Places like Gomez, Lola’s, Live Oak and the Grotto also have incredible scenes and great music almost every night of the week.
What would your perfect night in Fort Worth consist of?
I love to get out and enjoy the weather on my bicycle if it’s nice. Downtown and the southside areas are easily accessible by walking or biking. A couple my favorite spots to eat are Spice, Cane Rosso, Taco Diner, and Velvet Taco. Than I would bounce around and catch four or five different shows at Scat Jazz Lounge, Live Oak, Magnolia, Grotto, and wherever else has a great show that night.
If we’ve only got one day in Fort Worth, what should we do?
Well, I would send you to all the famous Fort Worth favorites. Water gardens and the cattle drive at the Stock yards during the day. Joe T Garcias that night. And you have to sneak in some time on the Trinity Trails renting a bicycle.
What’s your favorite time of year here and why?
Definitely spring. You’ve got lots of festivals for music and wine tasting. Arts Goggle on the southside, Symphony in the Gardens , the Main Street Arts Festival and so many others. The weather is amazing and there are so many things to do outside.
What do you think it is that makes Fort Worth such a unique destination?
It’s distinctly Texas, but it’s also distinctly Fort Worth. It’s the perfect blend of Texas Style – western and modern. Because of the generosity of so many people in Fort Worth we have some of the best museums in the country. Another thing that makes it so unique is how quickly things are progressing here. If you leave for a few years and come back you will always be amazed at how many things have been added, and how many areas have become vibrant hotspots of culture.
Finally, describe Fort Worth in one sentence…
A community firm in its roots with a big vision for its future.
