With 24 days, 9 stops, 4 flights, 33 interviews and a lot of driving ahead of us, our Black Tomato film crew needed to hit the ground running when we got to California – we had a lot of people and places to film in a pretty tight schedule. We all met up at Heathrow Terminal 2 and did a kit check before heading for the lounge. We were flying with Air New Zealand who had graciously given us access to their Business Premier offering to help kick start the trip feeling full of the energy we needed; interview number one was in Santa Barbara early the morning after landing.
On board, the three of us indulged in a few glasses of delicious New Zealand wine and obligingly tucked into a meal of chicken on miso mash with edamame beans and chilli shitake mushrooms followed by the cheese board. We chatted through our route in California before stretching out on our memory foam beds to watch a movie and catch some zeds, all in the blissful comfort of a fluffy duvet and pillows. Although, one member of the team was a little too pumped about the in-flight entertainment (and probably the adventures ahead) and decided to watch a few more films… call it work prep, if you like.
The daily Air New Zealand flight leaves London in the afternoon, so we arrived in LA in the evening – just in time to grab a light supper (read: drive thru) to keep us going on the drive west to Santa Barbara. Our film schedule wasn’t going to take us through LA proper, but we all got a good ogle at the landscape as we descended into LAX, past the Hollywood sign and over the endless sprawling city. And that was the beginning of our epic adventures across the Golden State, documented at (almost) all times through the camera lens… and now we have a beautiful set of videos that we hope will inspire you to follow suit.
