Not dissimilar to the buzz I found in Durban, there is an infectious energy on the V&A Waterfront, where I got my morning caffeine hit, realising that the artisan coffee trend hasn’t missed Cape Town. Afterwards, a stroll through the Watershed showed me the vast array of skills at the hands of some of the best producers of African craft and design.
In the afternoon I headed to the trendy Woodstock District where I fuelled myself with lunch at The Test Kitchen, one of the world’s top 50 restaurants, was simply unforgettable. The chef, Luke Dale Roberts creates his signature dishes with the very best of South African produce, and there is a lot of local seafood on the menu. He is famed for such eclectic creations such as the ‘TK Concrete Ball’: langoustine cooked inside a concrete ball at the table over burning star anise. Eager to have it all, I tried the tasting menu which included langoustine, lamb and kingklip; each plate beautifully presented and paired with perfect wines. The surfing in Cape Town is great too, especially for those who aren’t too confident – a trip down to Muizenberg on the way to Cape Point revealed a popular beginner’s spot, a sheltered beach, with gentle waves, all framed beautifully by scenic rows of colorful beach houses. My day ended with a trip to the Cape Point lighthouse and the Ostrich farm where I toured the breeding facilities and a room full of ostrich chicks.
