You might be excited about spending the rest of your Friday evening in the midst of a bustling urban subwaypolis, but take a few moments before you rush off into the weekend to appreciate the grandeur of this Colombian landscape…
The unspoilt Cocora Valley is sure to bring out the inner adventurer in all of us; nature-lovers and those looking to go off the grid and retreat from stuffed inboxes – this is the place for you. Located in the region of Quindio, in the central cordillera of the Andean mountains, the Cocora Valley is host to rare, protected and even endangered flora and fauna.
There are no fees or permits required to wander around the marvellous valleys, though a jeep shuttle service from Salento (and back again at the end of the day) incurs a small fee. But once you’ve arrived, you’re free to devise your own route through the majestic plains. If you’re looking for a little more guidance, there is a six-hour loop trail that will help you take in all that there is to see. One stop you have to make is at Acaime; a natural hummingbird sanctuary that also doubles as a good place to grab a coffee and recharge before finishing your walk.
Fresh air, verdant valleys, rolling hills and plenty of natural wildlife – probably beats evening drinks in the pub, right?
