This exuberant city is the new rising star in the craft beer scene. From brewery tours to tasting sessions, to its very own beer festival in November, it’s time to get into the heart of San Diego’s much loved pastime. Just as sun and surf are integral components to the way of life here, so too is craft beer – and San Diegans want this masterful produce to be contemplated in the same way as wine. This could just be the Napa or Sonoma of craft beer.
Starting with a couple of industry leaders setting up camp in sunny San Diego, such as Stone Brewing Co, still a firm favorite, today you’ll discover nearly 95 craft breweries in and around the city. You’ll never be far from a bar, brewery or microsite while you’re here, with each place priding themselves on quality, flavor and originality. From simple recipes to complex mixes passed down through the years, one thing these brews have in common is the sheer passion they are made with.
It’s well worth a visit to the bigger, household names to get to grips with authentic craft beer and try a variety – there are hundreds on offer, so you’re sure to find the perfect drop. But don’t miss out on a trip to the lesser known pop ups too; though small they sure are mighty and you’ll be trying something new each time. Alternatively, take Route 78 along the mystical winding highway and you’ll be able to see the county’s brewery dotted landscape.
Whether you head for the rolling hills or stay put in the city, San Diego offers some of the most exciting craft beers around. The emphasis is on quality from a technical perspective, but there’s an injection of raw passion and artistry here, and it can all be enjoyed in that oh so Californian laid back way.
