Mind blowing gastronomy, brown stone buildings, glass faced skyscrapers and enough culture to make any culture vulture green with envy – Montréal is cosmopolitan Canada at its best and it’s the perfect destination for the blockbuster weekend break or the sensational longer stay. The city is a melting pot of diverse talent, musical accolades and wild personality. There’s some exciting evidence of stylish redevelopment with modernistic architecture, older stately buildings since transformed into chic boutiques and restaurants, warehouses converted to swish new apartments and even the Old Port has changed purpose – now a well-kept park set alight by festivals and performances.
With a distinct French theme, the food in Montréal is one of its highest talking points. That and the epic nightlife (we love the late night lounge bars of the Latin quarter and the fun time clubs in Ste. Catherine), there’s truly never a dull moment here. Satisfy your thirst for jazz (and cocktails) at any of the bars that line the streets of St. Dennis and explore the arty indie scene in the neighborhood of Mile End. And if the Mile End is Québec’s answer to Shoreditch, Le Plateau to Québec, is what Greenwich is to New York. An arty neighborhood, Le Plateau’s cobble streets are lined with stylish boutiques, trendy restaurants and quirky bars to entertain you through the night.
And if all that partying gets just a little too much then head up and away from the buzzing subwaypolis to the triple peaked Mont Royal – the mountain the city got it’s name from. The gorgeous surrounding park designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (à la Central Park fame) provides the perfect opportunity for some well deserved chill out time and photo-worthy city wide vistas.
