Luxury camping is an increasingly popular option for adventurous travelers, who want to get back to nature and experience the world’s wild frontiers without compromising on comfort. From floating over the Great Barrier Reef in Australia to following the Great Migration in Tanzania, we’ve put together our top mobile camps across the world. You’ll never think about camping the same way again.
FLOATING CAMP OVER THE GREAT BARRIER REEF
On the outer edge of the Great Barrier Reef, just off the beautiful Moore Reef, found 26 nautical miles off the Cairns coast. This tented pontoon floats above pristine waters, home to colourful coral and thousands of marine species.
Taking outback living to the open ocean, spending a night between the sea and the stars is an experience that most Australians dream of. Moore Reef is predominantly a day trip destination, but thanks to our little black book, we can arrange for a night in a luxury camp aboard a private pontoon. From your private oasis, you can enjoy canapes with the crew, tuck into a ‘surf & turf’ barbeque dinner, or simply sit back and stargaze. Let the waves lull you to sleep before waking up to one of the most incredible sunrises you are ever likely to witness.

MOBILE LUXURY CAMPS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MOROCCAN DESERT
50km southwest of M’Hamid, in the heart of the southern Moroccan desert amongst the most dramatic sand dunes in the Zagora region. More vast and less visited than its more famous cousin Erg Chebbi, the landscape is breathtakingly bleak, a million miles from the manic Marrakesh. Our canvas oasis is roughly an hour from M’Hamid by 4×4 or in local parlance, five days by camel.
Splendid in its isolation, surrounded only by towering sands and twinkling stars, this traditional yet luxurious camp is an authentic Arabian Nights experience without any compromise on comfort. Take part in some trekking to work up an appetite for a delicious fireside meal under the night sky before turning into your deluxe tent. Serenity and solitude (and sand-boarding) are in abundance and compared to other popular dune retreats it is easy to imagine you are the only person playing in the world’s biggest sandbox.

PRIVATE CAMPING OVERNIGHT AMIDST MAYAN RUINS IN THE JUNGLES OF GUATEMALA
In the remote Mayan village of Uaxactún, one hour north of Flores. This ancient civilization is found deep in the Petén basin in the Guatemalan jungle, home to the oldest known Mayan astronomical complex and several ancient ruins and artworks.
Spending a night in the dense greenery surrounded only by ancient stones is not just a world away from modern civilisation; it’s a different world entirely. Stand on the same steps as Mayan astronomers did hundreds of years ago and marvel at the architectural ingenuity in the positioning of the temples to observe key dates in the solar calendar, through the rise and fall of the sun. Back at the candlelit camp, serenaded by the sounds of the forest – the lion won’t be the only one sleeping in the jungle tonight.

NOMADIC CAMPING IN THE MONGOLIAN WILDERNESS
In the rugged and remote Bayan-Ulgii region of Western Mongolia, near the Kazakhstan border – six hours’ drive from the nearest village.
Swap wi-fi for wilderness as you disconnect entirely from the 21st century and practically step back in time into a Mongolian mountain lifestyle. The locals have preserved their nomadic way of life for centuries, their physical isolation allowing them to keep their traditions alive in an ever-modernising world. Over 80% of the world’s eagle hunters live here; watching man and magnificent bird work in perfect harmony is quite unforgettable. You will bed down in an authentic felt-lined ger tent, in peaceful isolation amongst the arid, hostile landscape.

ARCTIC WILDERNESS CAMP IN SVALBARD, NORWAY
North of the Arctic Circle, halfway between Norway and the North Pole, the Svalbard archipelago is one of the world’s northernmost inhabited areas. Your luxury tented camp is isolated in the ice, in total seclusion amongst the beautiful, bleak white wilderness.
Simply, the perfect polar experience for the intrepid Arctic adventurer. This extreme expedition traverses the frozen Land of the Midnight Sun, across unspoilt ice fields and pristine snow. Very few people ever visit this area of the archipelago, as remote as it is rugged. Ski, sled and snowmobile through the epic landscape before gathering in the snug dining tent for a hearty meal after a tough day on the tundra. If you visit in the summer months, the constant daylight illuminating the ice and snow will create a lasting polar panorama that you are unlikely to ever forget.

CAMP IN THE HIGH VALLEYS OF LADAKH, INDIA
Chamba Camp is nestled in the hills of Ladakh, at a staggeringly high-altitude 3,600 metres, overlooking the Thiksey Monastery. Less than an hour from Leh (the capital of Ladakh), this ultra-comfortable campsite is an otherworldly oasis amongst the dramatic valleys.
The ultimate ‘glamping’ experience; your sumptuous tent, individually decorated and finished in the colonial style, boasts private butlers as well as bathrooms. There are many activities to choose from: trek off the beaten track, raft down the river or ramble through remote villages, enjoy a picnic while watching polo, or even participate in a séance session. A spiritual setting in a spectacularly stark landscape, the gentle chanting of prayers from the 15th century monastery echoes through the hills. SANCTUARY MIGRATION CAMP, TANZANIA
The definition of ‘mobile camp’, this safari expedition follows the Great Migration over three locations across the Serengeti National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site covering 5700 square miles of savannah and grassland in Eastern Africa. Depending on the time and place, the camp is generally reachable within three hours from Arusha via road and air.
An intimate, traditional tented camp in the classic style with a luxurious look, this is the ultimate safari experience amongst spectacular scenery. Each tent has a personal attendant, on hand to prepare your traditional bush-style bucket shower. The game viewing opportunities are unparalleled; over two million wildebeest make the migration each year, and the National Park is home to the “Big Five” as well as cheetah, hyena, and zebra.
