Ane Ugarte is the Director of Sales and Marketing at the Gran Hotel Bahia del Duque Resort and has a passion for all things Tenerife. Here’s what she has to say about the place she calls home…
How long have you lived in Tenerife and what is it about the island that you love the most?
I have been living here now for nine years, but I also lived here for five years 30 years ago, so in 2 different periods . I like the climate , the landscape , the people and the fact that you have the sea and mountains both together within a short distance. Because of the island’s micro-climate, in the North you can really experience a very different landscape and climate which, to me, makes it feel like a mini-continent.
How does the island inspire your work and creativity?
My main creativity comes from observing the sea, this beautiful setting where on many days you can see the islands of Gomera , el Hierro and La Palma . This contrast between the blue sky , the sea and the marvellous sunset is really amazing and inspiring.
Are there any new openings on the island that can’t be missed?
The island is constantly changing with new projects including new restaurants, gastronomic concepts, new attractions for our theme parks, new hotels , a lot of renovation and updates …this is one of the best things about this destination.Read more
If you only had one day to show us the best of Tenerife, where would you take us?
Difficult, I would probably take you to Mount Teide and the coast of Masca which is impressive and, if we have time, out on a wonderful whale watching excursion to finish the day .
Have you got a favorite island event or festival?
My personal favorite events are related to the culture of the island, such as the carnival, or the Corpus Christi at La Orotava with the wonderful flower decorations on the streets – it really shouldn’t be missed – it’s so unique!
How would you spend your perfect evening in Tenerife, winter or summer?
My perfect evening would be at a nice setting facing the sea in a small restaurant , if possible with views to the island of Gomera, enjoying a plate of fresh fish from the island and a glass of a local white wine – perfect!
Where is your favorite local’s hangout? Why is it so special?
I very much love all of the beautiful chill-out terraces that are on the coast – simple and extraordinary at the same time .
What’s your favorite time of year in Tenerife and why?
My favorite time of year is either May/June or September when it’s calm, beautiful weather and quiet. Christmas is also special as we have the snow on Mount Teide and the sunshine on the beach – what an outstanding contrast!
