The Empty Quarter of Dhofar is one of the world’s largest deserts, with most of its areas still remaining largely unexplored and uninhabited. Exciting, right? That’s what we thought, and the reality of it blew us away…
AT A GLANCE
Welcome to a land of vast sand dunes, unconquered territories and sun blanched landscapes. A sea of sand stretching for miles in every direction, the Empty Quarter of Dhofar is as breathtaking as it is huge. It’s a magical place, and one of the few destinations left in the world that genuinely feels untouched and leaves you with a true sense of remoteness and inner peace.
WHAT TO SEE
Okay, so as a massive expanse of nothingness, you might think there’s not much to see. Think again. Climbing the mammoth sand dunes and gaining a panoramic view of this incredible desert is an experience you will never forget. We recommend taking a jeep ride across the dunes and spending the night in a luxury camp. Be sure to wake up in time to watch the sun rise over these golden mounds that stretch for as far as the eye can see. A spectacle (and a feeling of absolute isolation) that you’ll remember for a lifetime and want to repeat again and again.
WHY WE LOVE IT
This is the place to go for a true sense of the landscape described in Thesiger’s Arabian Sands. It’s an unforgettable experience that will have you feeling like you’re the last person left on earth. Most definitely a trip worth taking.
