Ok so perhaps its old news that California is a power house when it comes to wine, but we think there’s a little pocket of the state worth highlighting a bit more. Step in Santa Barbara. The unique climate and lay of the land here ensures wonderful and diverse growing conditions, meaning huge variety and incredible flavor. The nearby Santa Ynez Mountains are home to world class vineyards in Buellton, Los Olivos, Lompoc and Solvang so you’re never too far away from a fine tipple or two. Further north, the Santa Maria Valley has a lower-lying, expansive landscape with sun-drenched vineyards and a rich agricultural heritage.
First let’s head to downtown Santa Barbara and experience the Urban Wine Trail, a collection of tasting rooms featuring the best local wines all within a few blocks of each other. Submerge yourself in the laidback culture as you learn tips from the experts whilst sampling the crispest whites and most mellow reds. We suggest you take this trail by foot, or even better, take a pedicab, allowing you to sample to your hearts content. You’ll also find yourself surrounded by incredible Spanish-influenced, urban scenery that leads down to the ocean.
Perhaps it’s becoming apparent that this area is bursting with sommeliers waiting to teach you a thing or two about grapes. How about escaping the buzz of Santa Barbara and heading towards a slightly quieter wine trail? Sprawling countryside and a vast collection of wines, you’ll never be too far away from something you’ve never tasted before.
Both the urban wine trail and the vineyards in Santa Ynez and Santa Maria Valleys offer first class wines and breath taking views; it’s urban V rural, city buzz or country calm. If we were you, we’d go for both. But perhaps we’re greedy.
