Puffins in Vestmannaeyjar, Westman Islands

Where to travel in the Northern Hemisphere in 2020

Explorers may have mapped the world, but that doesn’t mean all of its secrets have been uncovered. Over the past few months, our intrepid Travel Experts have been building their list of 2020’s ultimate ‘it’ destinations; some that are brand new, and some old familiars that have been relaunched with voguish new openings and once-in-a-lifetime experiences. Beware: these places will cause serious dinner-party envy.

Dolomites,Italy

Dolomites, Italy

For an on-trend combination of wine and wellness (aided by 2019’s much-trumpeted opening of the Lefay Resort), Italy’s hikeable alpine interface with Austria is poised to become something truly special. With the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene recently inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and a flurry of new ‘wine safaris’  in the offing, 2020 is going to be a big year for this rugged, picturesque counterpoint to more traditional Lake Garda.

Westman Islands, Iceland

Since its startling recovery from the 2008 financial crash, this Viking-founded island of lava and ice has experienced a glittering renaissance. But with the Golden Circle seeming like old hat, 2020 will be the year—with Black Tomato—of Vestmannaeyjar, or the Westman Islands. This highly remote area features puffins, whales, and belugas, alongside tours of wild and dramatic coastlines, remote hunting lodges, and an intensely innovative gourmet offering with adventurous outlets such as Slippurinn.

TAKE ME THERE

Jerusalem, Israel

From the ancient City of David to the vibrant night-life of Tel Aviv, eyes are turning to this gorgeous slice of Levantine coastline. The April 2020 opening of the Six Senses Shaharut in the Negev Desert will be combined with expert tours and briefings from a leading Israeli reporter, who will help travellers to frame the complex geopolitical tensions in which Israel is enmeshed, as well as curator-led tours of the Israel Museum.

Hydra, Greece

Each year, the island of Hydra—largely unknown to tourist crowds—is transformed into a living installation when the art world descends to its craggy, bucolic shores for a summer of creativity and delight. Figures including Dakis Joannoi and Dimitrios Antonitsis transform everyday buildings on the island, from a school to a slaughterhouse, into cutting-edge exhibition spaces. While everyone else flops off to Santorini, this is our take on where to get a fill of culture and authentic (albeit slightly ‘surreal’) island life.

Pandas in China

Chengdu, China

In 2020, China will open its first-ever national park in Sanjiangyuan (on the Tibetan Plateau) and the Giant Panda National Park (covering areas in Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu). The latter will connect 67 giant panda reserves spread across the southwest. The scale and significance of this is unprecedented, and hard to summarise without using an excessive number of exclamation marks. This is particularly important in China’s efforts to address issues including pollution and conservation. And we’re extremely on- board for it.

Yerevan, Armenia

With a bright, post-Soviet sheet on edgy, undiscovered cool, Armenia has culture, food and landscape in bucketfuls. With the recent opening of The Alexander in Yerevan, Armenia’s red-stone capital city has its first big-leagues luxury hotel opening; making 2020 the perfect moment to head east: across the crumbling monasteries of Sanahin and Haghpat to the heat-soaked plains of Ararat.
