Colombia has come a long way since its years of turmoil. Experience the passion of a culture as vivacious as the colors of Cartagena.
Keep it hush – but here’s one to watch. Colombia has emerged as a safe and captivating destination for those searching for culture, coffee and mountainous landscapes and jungle-fringed beaches. The spirit of salsa and the stories of inspiration told through graffiti-filled streets, riding with llaneros on horseback through the floodplains of a land less traveled and soaring above jaw dropping canyons. Our private guide Andreas and his close friends in Colombia are ready to open their doors and take you past the colonial towns and out to the places you never knew existed.
As ever, if you can’t see your ideal trip here then we can still plan it for you.
A country once considered repellently ‘dangerous’, Colombia has not only emerged as a safe, but a remarkable and beautiful country – welcoming to visitors. Today, Narcos is just a TV series. You can breathe a sigh of relief. Set against its beautiful Andean backdrop – scattered with jungle-fringed beaches, vast grasslands, coffee plantations and colonial towns – Colombia’s equatorial position makes it a haven for biodiversity. Welcoming you with open arms, Colombians are eager to show you their country. They might even challenge you to a game of Tejo (the nation’s throwing sport).
Tailor made tours in Colombia will take you to the places you never knew existed. Feel like royalty with a horse-drawn carriage tour down the cobbled alleys of Cartagena, or get your taste buds tingling with an exclusive rum tasting session before slipping on your salsa shoes and dance into the night. Travel to valleys where you’ll be the only person for miles, as these areas are only accessible via helicopter.
Being the only South American country with both a Caribbean and Pacific coastline, Colombia is home to a plethora of tropical, jungle-washed beaches. After exploring Cartagena’s UNESCO inscribed Old Town and colonial buildings, ride the waves via speedboat to Caribbean paradise on the hidden Rosario Islands. Home to some of Colombia’s most diverse marine life, snorkel around the shallow waters or dive deep into the colourful coral reefs, before cruising ten minutes to the exquisite Las Islas Hotel.

The best time to visit Colombia depends on which region you are prioritising. Colombia has two dry seasons: December to March, and July to August. These are generally the best months for the Caribbean coast (Cartagena, Tayrona), the Coffee Triangle, and Bogota. The Cartagena area is warm year-round, but the dry season brings clearer skies and calmer seas for the Islas del Rosario. The Amazon region is more accessible during the dry season from June to September. Colombia is a year-round destination — the lush green landscapes of the Coffee Triangle are actually at their most beautiful during the green season.
For a luxury Colombia vacation, eight to ten days is the sweet spot — enough to combine Cartagena with one or two inland regions without feeling rushed. Seven days works well for a focused itinerary: Cartagena, the islands, and a short coffee region excursion. Twelve days opens up the full Colombia experience: Bogota, Medellin, the Coffee Triangle, Tayrona, and Cartagena. Colombia rewards those who slow down — the best experiences happen when you spend time in one place rather than moving quickly between cities.
Colombia is safe to visit, and has been for many years. The country’s transformation since the 1990s is one of the most remarkable stories in Latin America. Bogota, Medellin, Cartagena, and the Coffee Triangle are all well-established, welcoming destinations for international travelers. As with any destination, local knowledge matters — knowing which areas to prioritize and which to avoid is one of the key reasons to travel with a specialist who has private guides on the ground.
The cost of a luxury Colombia vacation with Black Tomato ranges in cost based on your travel preferences since all trips are customized. What makes Cartagena worth visiting is the combination of a UNESCO-inscribed walled city and immediate access to the Caribbean. The colonial architecture, horse-drawn carriages, and pastel facades of the Old Town are genuinely extraordinary, and the food scene — seafood, Caribbean spices, and Colombia’s best rum — is as good as anything in Latin America. From Cartagena, a private speedboat to the Islas del Rosario takes under an hour. A skilled local guide makes Cartagena a completely different experience from walking it independently.
Colombia is an excellent family destination. The Pirate Scavenger Hunt through Cartagena, snorkelling the Islas del Rosario, horseback riding through coffee plantations, and ghost tours of Bogota all generate genuine excitement across age groups. Colombia is compact enough that internal travel is manageable, and the warmth of Colombian culture toward children makes it a naturally welcoming environment.
