The clocks run on time. There are three official languages. It plays host to some decidedly Neolithic archaeological sites – great houses of timber whose elevated floors were pummelled into the lake beds of Zurich and Constance. There is a large Hadron collider here, doing unspeakable things to molecules far beneath the earth. This is a tawdry introduction to what is, in fact, a jaw-dropping and effortlessly stylish vacation destination, where the hotels are bright and the food is spectacular. Probably thanks to Switzerland’s handy disposition between France, Italy, and Germany.
A vacation to Switzerland is – by dint of the country’s effortless service and impeccable taste – already high on the luxury scale. To experience the best of the best, we recommend a private Switzerland tour, circling high – by train – across the Golden Pass to Montreux, where each carriage is decked out with belle epoque grandeur. When you arrive at the shores of Lake Geneva, and check in to the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, you’ll feel as if time has slipped, gently, backwards to an altogether easier time. Sail to bright Vevey for an exclusive candlelit dinner on the shores.
It’s possible that there isn’t a bad hotel in Switzerland. If you want to test that theory, be our guests. However, we have the pulse on the country’s undeniable ‘big ticket’ luxury hotels, from the Grand Budapest Hotel-esque Fairmont Montreux to Zurich’s rustic, arty and effortlessly cool Widder Hotel. The Swiss know how to do a good hotel. And that’s putting it lightly.
Fondue – the most (or least) romantic of foods, depending on how you look at it. Switzerland makes for a sumptuous, glamorous honeymoon destination, for its sharp Alpine peaks, premium hotels, blisteringly attentive service, and wine cellars which will require a little sit down after viewing. The culinary fortitude of Italy meets the style of Germany and the viticulture of France. High up in the shimmering Alps, there’s only you to enjoy it.
Interlaken
A fairy-tale town, and the adventure capital of Switzerland.
Built on a narrow stretch of valley, between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, and surrounded by alpine meadows and mountains, Interlaken is a breath of fresh air. With lots of hiking trails and adrenaline-pumping activities like skydiving to get stuck into, Interlaken tempts those travellers seeking a thrill. We’ll take you to the iconic cogwheel train at Grindelwald to tackle some steep gradients and kilometre-long tunnels, as you make your way up to Europe’s highest railway station.
St Moritz
Switzerland’s original winter wonderland.
Nestled in Switzerland’s Engadin Valley, the alpine town of St Moritz sits between a glistening lake and a ring of mountains, and is simply stunning. Arrive via the Glacier Express and get stuck into exploring the town, valley – and food scene – with the help of our local guide, Gabriel. For something to really remember, catch the funicular up to Muottas Muragl for sweeping panoramic views across the valley and enjoy an exclusive, gourmet chocolate tasting session.
Montreux
A lakeside town steeped in musical history.
Firstly, arrive onto the shores of Lake Geneva in style making the famous rail journey across the Golden Pass. Home to lakeside markets, elegant hotels like Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, and many music events including the famed jazz festival, Montreux is a buzzing place to be.
