Floating amid the warm waters of the Indian Ocean, a luxury vacation in Mauritius offers an azure-hued reset button unlike anywhere else. Whether you’re drifting across glistening waters, diving down with shark researchers or immersing yourself in the melting pot of Indian, African and European influences; the every day will feel a million miles away as you dip your toe in a unique and indulgent paradise.
Of this land of dholl puri and pure beauty, Mark Twain was moved to write that heaven had been ‘copied’ after it. Yes, its beaches simply purr with decadent comfort, but there is much to find beyond the sands. From thriving Creole culture, sega dancing, and horse races in the city of Port Louis (each interrupted by a necessary taste of gateaux piments), make for a far more compelling cultural experience than at first meets the eye.
As we said, the beaches – which beautifully fringe the island like a necklace of diamond – are only part of the Mauritian story (though an incredibly compelling chapter of it). Private tours of the island can encompass everything from making lychee-infused rum to exploring its sub-tropical gardens. Or simply chilling out with some yoga. The good life is just that easy.
The islander life puts great emphasis – upon this sizzling, sumptuous pearl in the Indian Ocean – on laid-back luxury. The hotels in Mauritius gladly follow suit, offering everything from a gorgeous outpost of the Four Seasons Resort to the truly tranquil vibe of Heritage The Villas, located on the beautiful Domaine de Bel Ombre estate. It has a private chef and spa therapist, too.
There is no stress, no strain. It is the perfect place to drink in married life with a luxury honeymoon for all of the senses. Bright yellow and blue pirogues – flat bottomed boats maneuvered by a eucalyptus pole – dapple the morning waters, while beachside bars dole out crisp cups of rum and the scent of long, lazy barbeques fills the air on Sundays. That, combined with the island’s many spas and luxury resorts, make for the perfect place to do a lot of enviable nothing.
