Camp Kiattua, Greenland
The site of an ancient Inuit summer hunting ground, Camp Kiattua is a tranquil haven set deep in the Greenlandic wilderness. Wedged between mountains and overlooking the icy waters of Nuup Kangerlua fjord, you’ll relax and explore beneath the midnight sun – or the first glimmers of the aurora borealis. Pitched up in May and taken down at the end of September, this camp offers the chance to see both. It also has its own hot tub. Enough said.
LOCATION
Located 80km deep in the second largest fjord system in the world, Kiattua is only accessible by boat or helicopter. After touching down in Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, you’ll set off for the camp. With no roads, no houses, and the nearest village two days walk away, you’ll find yourself between mountains and fjords in your very own Arctic wilderness.
YOUR ROOM
Wrapped in comfort and Greenlandic charm, each of the six heated tents feature comfy beds, cozy reading chairs, and warm lighting. Each sleeping tent also has its own separate bath tent . With all the amenities of a modern bathroom, you’ll find locally made bath products and hot water showers (perfect after a day exploring on the ice, or in the Arctic Ocean).
WHY WE LIKE IT
Meaning “the warm place” in Greenlandic, Camp Kiattua lives up to its name. It has its own Arctic hot tub, of course, but there are also smaller details. While you’re out and about – kayaking, trekking, spearfishing, or paddleboarding between icebergs – your tent will be prepared for the night. Returning to the warmth of candlelight, fired-up heaters, and heated blankets, you’ll cozy up and share stories of the day’s adventures. Then, you’ll dream of tomorrow’s.
SUSTAINABILITY
Camp Kiattua uses waste management initiatives to reduce their impact on the surrounding landscapes. This involves transferring wastewater to a dry well and ensuring all non-organic waste is brought back to Nuuk to be disposed of properly. The camp also uses organic soaps.
