Sikelia, Pantelleria

Sikelia is an exclusive haven for travelers seeking a peaceful getaway totally off the beaten track. Hidden away on the beautiful Italian island of Pantelleria, the resort is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. There is absolutely no sign of commerciality or tourism anywhere on the island, making it one of the most relaxing and luxurious vacation destinations available in Italy. There is no central building and the hotel is instead made up of just 20 individual suites and a superb restaurant serving stylish and elegant meals that are inspired by a mix of Southern Italian, Arab and North African cuisines. Set behind a sculptural white wall, Sikelia is incredibly private with a gorgeous free-form swimming pool tucked away in a tranquil courtyard.

Location

Sikelia is located high on a hill of the beautiful Italian island of Pantelleria, which lies between Sicily and Tunisia. Pantelleria is just a short flight from Sicily and the airport is only a 25-minute drive from the hotel so, despite its remote location, it is surprisingly easy to get to.

Your room

Sikelia has only 20 rooms in total, all of which are individual suites with their own private bathroom and outdoor terrace. All of the suites are carefully built into the landscape using locally sourced stone, and although they all share the same stylish, minimalist design, they are all different in their own right. Every room is comfortable but elegant, with luxurious detailing, fresh fabrics and contemporary interiors. Half of the suites overlook the hotel’s tranquil courtyard and pool, whilst the other half enjoy stunning ocean views. All of the suites have been designed specifically so guests can enjoy a unique sunset view from the privacy of their own terrace.

Why we like it

Sikelia is the labour of love of Giulia Pazienza who came to the island more than 20 years ago to grow her own wine. Now, as well as the retreat, Giulia also owns an expansive vineyard where, during the summer, she runs a pop-up restaurant amongst the vines with live music and dancing. Year-round, however, a trip to Lago di Venere is a must. A huge lake in the middle of the island, surrounded by volcanic hot springs and rejuvenating mud, it makes for one of the most authentic spa experiences as you rub mud into your hair and skin. It must also be said that Pantelleria isn’t your average island experience; instead of white sandy beaches, the island’s rugged coastline is dotted with small hidden coves, best explored by a peaceful afternoon onboard one of Sikelia’s private boats, swimming and sunbathing.
