Sikelia is an exclusive haven for travelers seeking a peaceful getaway totally off the beaten track. Hidden away on the beautiful Italian island of Pantelleria, the resort is surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. There is absolutely no sign of commerciality or tourism anywhere on the island, making it one of the most relaxing and luxurious vacation destinations available in Italy. There is no central building; the hotel is made up of just 20 individual suites and a superb restaurant serving stylish and elegant meals that are inspired by a mix of Southern Italian, Arab and North African cuisines. The whole resort is set behind a sculptural white wall so it feels incredibly private and spacious and we love the hotel’s free form swimming pool which is tucked away in the hotel’s tranquil courtyard. Sikelia is the labour of love of Giulia Pazienza who came to the island 20 years ago to grow her own wine. As well as the retreat Giulia also owns an expansive vineyard where during the summer she runs a pop-up restaurant amongst the vines with live music and dancing.
Sikelia is located on top of a high on a hill on the beautiful Italian island of Pantelleria, which lies between Sicily and Tunisia. Pantelleria is just a short flight from Sicily and the airport is only a 24 minute drive from the hotel so despite its remote location, it is surprisingly easy to get to.
Sikelia has only 20 rooms in total, all of which are individual suites with their own private bathroom and outdoor terrace. All of the suites are carefully built into the landscape using locally sourced stone, and although they all share the same stylish, minimalist design, they are all different in their own right. Every room is comfortable but elegant, with luxurious detailing, fresh fabrics and contemporary interiors. Half of the suites overlook the hotel’s tranquil courtyard and pool, whilst the other half enjoy stunning ocean views. All of the suites have been designed specifically so guests can enjoy a unique sunset view from the privacy of their own terrace.
Why we like it
Lago di Venere is a huge lake in the middle of the island that is surrounded by volcanic hot springs and rejuvenating mud. Guests can go and rub mud over their skin and hair for the most authentic spa experience out there. Pantelleria isn’t your average island experience; instead of white sandy beaches, the island’s rugged coastline is dotted with small hidden coves which guests are able to explore using small private boats provided by the hotel. We recommend taking a boat out for a peaceful afternoon of swimming and sunbathing.
