Okonjima
Home to the AfriCat Foundation, Okonjima combines impeccable service and amenities with up close and personal viewing of some of the world’s most beautiful cats. Embark on a nature walk like no other by radio-tracking the rehabilitated cheetahs before setting off on a journey to find the elusive leopards. If all the action gets too much then why not bask by the pool that overlooks the bush and spend the evening sitting out by the camp’s very own watering hole? You may even see a rare honey badger or a porcupine or two.
Location
Hidden in the Omboroko Mountains, just west of Waterberg Plateau, Okonjima is truly special. Located 225 kilometres from Windhoek, the camp is accessible either by road or (if you are a bit short on time) private plane; landing in the middle of the bush with a welcoming committee of cheetahs running alongside your plane is an experience not to be missed.
Your room
You truly are spoilt for choice at Okonjima with four different lodges to choose from. Originally a family farmhouse, the 20 bedrooms of Plains Camp have a homely feel but are nothing short of exquisite. Meanwhile, offering an authentic African experience in nine thatched chalets is Luxury Bush Camp. Whilst for something more intimate, there’s the four-bed Villa and the two-bed Private Bush Suite. All boast sweeping views across the plains and stand in quiet corners perfect for lapping up the calm serenity of the game reserve. It’s hard to go wrong at Okonjima.
Why we like it
There are very few places in the world where you can feel completely at home yet still be surrounded by such a fascinating landscape (not to mention the animals that just love striking a pose…once you spot them of course). Okonjima is as near to perfection as you are likely to find, with knowledgeable guides, a dedication to conservation and fantastic food. It really is one of Africa’s hidden gems – we can’t sing it’s praises enough.
