Samara Private Game Reserve

You are in for a real treat here. One of the largest private reserves in the country, Samara Private Game Reserve showcase’s mind-blowing diversity in landscape and wildlife South Africa is known for. Hole up in one of Samara’s three luxurious lodges by night, and by day explore the vast plains on foot or in a jeep with one of the trained rangers.

Located in the Eastern Cape, it’s a 50 minute air transfer to Samara from Port Elizabeth airport. Or, if you’d prefer to admire the scenery from ground level, you can take a two and half hour drive from Port Elizabeth through rolling savannahs and just sit back and watch the scenery come to you.

Your Room

The interior of the light and airy lodges are a reflection of the wilderness outside with a charming colonial twist. When you hear the breathtaking outdoors calling your name, a swimming pool and private veranda and porch await you.

Why we like it

Here at Black Tomato we love a Safari and a stay at Samara delivers. That’s not to say the luxurious lodgings and mouth-watering cuisine are not incredible too, but the wildlife spotting is clearly the one. The reserve continuously attempts to reintroduce game into its bush, so keep your eyes peeled for anything from white rhinos, to mountain zebras to giraffes and even a cheetah or two if you’re lucky.

Little ones, (read: future conservationists) are more than catered for at Samara by the Aardvark program that takes them on adventure safaris, provides private dinners and hosts kids at the lodge while mum and dad take a break – or a date. Kids will go tracking and learn orienteering – after putting on their camouflage face paint, of course. Learn cheetah tales and the star’s names and stories. The lodge also boasts an animal enclosure, tennis courts, trampolines, croquet sets and organizes bushman painting lessons and treasure hunts.
