Set above a secluded white sand beach with magnificent views, Thonga Beach Lodge is quietly tucked away in a glorious coastal dune forest which celebrates the true spirit of Mother Nature. Drift back to your luxurious thatched suite after lazy days on the beach or head out for coastal adventures. Spend day’s snorkelling and diving the great underwater seascapes of the Elephant Coast, home to a display of colorful sea life, including shoals of fish, sharks and bottlenose dolphins, or try your hand at turtle tracking, surf or fly fishing. A little further afield lies the dramatic world heritage site of Lake Sibaya where sundowners await you on the shores of Southern Africa’s fresh water lake after exploring by guided kayak. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for hippo and crocodile along your travels.
Set on the pristine shores of the Maputuland coast, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Mabibi is a magical place of coastal forests, grasslands, bush, shimmering lakes and exquisite sandy beaches. Thonga Beach Lodge is comprised of 24 luxury eco lodges ideally located in the heart of the most unspoilt wilderness beaches left on the African continent. Each thatched bush suite has taken inspiration from the traditional Thonga fishing village, capturing the essence of a luxury Robinson Crusoe hideaway where you can relax in dazzling surroundings, with sweeping views of the stunning beach below.
Thonga’s elegant thatched suites are raised on wooden stilts to ensure no harm comes to the sensitive dune soils (it doesn’t do any harm for those views either!) The Thonga inspired architecture are luxuriously decorated with bleached wood, glass and natural materials, thoughtfully designed to create a romantic and open ambiance, with each boasting their own private balcony for those romantic evenings after a deliciously prepared dinner.
Why we like it
We love that that this Eco lodge is perfectly positioned for some of the best dive sites in South Africa and for days of guilt free bathing on perfect sands and dining al fresco under stars. We especially like visiting a Tsonga homestead and learning about their unique heritage and culture.
