Tswalu Kalahari, South Africa

Nestled in the heart of the Northern Cape, the five luxurious suites in Tswalu are the pinnacle of safari chic. Constructed from local stone and rich red clay, topped with traditional Kalahari thatch, these suites are the perfect desert safari retreat. Float in the huge infinity pool, surrounded by endless, rolling landscapes or sit in a shady sala and relax with a good book. After a day’s game spotting, you can enjoy a hearty meal from the ever-changing seasonal menu, and don’t miss tucking into the barbequed meat from the typical South African boma.

In a 1,000sq km area, Tswalu is not only the largest private game reserve in South Africa, it is also the most elegant and beautiful. Tswalu, meaning “a new beginning”, has a strong conservation focus and is full of incredible wildlife. Black rhino rub horns with Buffalo, and there are Lions, Cheetah and Giraffes to name but a few. All this, and Tswalu is just a 2-hour flight from Cape Town.

Your room

Each of the five suites is huge, with a large bedroom and snug living area, where you can sink into cozy sofas in front of the open fireplace. The white and terracotta stone walls give the suites a homely feel and wooden floors are covered with sumptuous handmade rugs. Unique furnishings are carved out of local wood and the beds are vast and comfortable. Sit out on the private balcony and watch animals drink at the nearby watering hole, or enjoy a private dinner as the sun sets. The spacious bathrooms have standalone tubs and enjoy a rainforest shower inside or outside the suite.

Why we like it

We love spending an hour or two in the mezzanine library, packed to the wooden rafters with interesting books about South Africa. The small museum displaying ancient artifacts is also a fascinating way to while away those quiet desert evenings.
