Chatham Bars Inn, Cape Cod

A hotel with more than a century of character and charm, the Chatham Bars Inn beachside retreat in the small town of Chatham, New England, will take care of your every want and need. The hotel takes luxury living to new heights; from private cottages and spa suites to an oceanfront veranda where you’ll witness the most spectacular of sunrises. If you want to wake up to views of a local fishing fleet heading out for their daily catch, bathe beneath the sun on a private quarter-mile beach and sip Champagne by a fire on a cozy Cape Cod evening then this is the place for you.

The quaint town of Chatham is at the elbow of Cape Cod which extends into the Atlantic Ocean from the southeastern corner of Massachusetts. Its historic downtown is just steps away from the hotel and its twee tree-lined main street is home to galleries, gift shops and old-fashioned candy and ice cream parlours. Cape Cod, which is just under a two-hour drive from Boston International Airport, is surrounded on three sides by water, so it comes as no surprise that Chatham is famously known for its fishing. Why not head out on the oceanfront hotel’s 34ft boat and “fish the cape” for Black Sea Bass, Bluefin Tuna and even sharks.

Think of Chatham Bars Inn as more of a village than a hotel. With guestrooms dotted about between the historic Main Inn, the standalone Cottages and even the spa, it’ll be difficult to take your pick. Our go-to’s are the classic Cape Cod shingle-style cottages that are perfectly placed along the private beach; all with sea view decks and sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean and Chatham Harbor. While the quintessential New England style cottages are a dream, the twelve adult-only Spa Suites are something extra special. Designed with luxury and pampering in mind, each suite boasts an oversized hydrotherapy tub, sauna and steam shower.

No visit to Cape Cod is complete without a clambake, and no one does a clambake better than Chatham Bars Inn. ‘What is a clambake?’ we hear you ask. It’s a New England tradition that dates back centuries and involves ‘just caught’ seafood such as lobster, mussels and clams and locally sourced vegetables from the hotel’s own 8-acre farm being steamed over a wood-fired pit layered with seaweed or rockweed. The result? Fresh, full-flavoured seafood unlike anything you’ve ever tasted before. Gather around the fire pit on the beach and let the night draw to a close under the moonlight.
