Location

This former shipbuilding mecca is littered with quaint cafés, art galleries and antique shops and is now a fashionable and wealthy town full of history and charm. Kennebunk became a household name in the US starting in the 1980s when its most famous residents, the presidential Bush family, hosted world leaders like Margaret Thatcher in their summer compound there. Mansions built by sea captains over 100 years ago still stand tall, glaring out over the sparkling ocean. It’s a hiker’s and swimmer’s paradise and we recommend taking advantage of the hotel’s bikes and canoes to explore the area, which has some of the best beaches in New England.

Your Room

The rooms are spread out over the grounds and you can choose from the Guest House, Suites or Cottages. The Guest House rooms are located close to the swimming pool and just a short walk away from the Main House, surrounded by views of the magical woodland forest. The Suites offer spectacular views of the river but are a bit more of a trek away from the House – ideal if you want some more privacy. For families, we’d suggest the Loon Cottage, hidden away by the river with its own private outdoor space. It has two bedrooms at both ends of the cottage with a couple of wood burning fires to warm you up on a cold winter’s evening.

Why we like it

If you’re food lovers like us, then you’re in for a real treat. The onsite restaurant, converted from two old rustic barns dating from the 1820s, only uses the finest ingredients in New England and is a real highlight of Kennebunk. Be prepared to be serenaded by a live pianist and enjoy your award-winning meal in a fantastic atmosphere. White Barn Inn is wonderfully placed for outdoor activities too and we can arrange whale watching, lobster trapping or even deep sea fishing. Or, if you’re feeling less active, just sit by the pool with your cocktail in hand and don’t worry about a thing.
