Belize’s beating heart lies inland, in the forested highlands of the Cayo District. Here, ancient Mayan civilisations built cities that still rise from the canopy at Xunantunich and Caracol — the latter so remote it takes a four-wheel drive to reach, and all the better for it. Days here are spent canoeing by torchlight through Mayan cave systems, tracking jaguars and pumas across private reserve land, and returning each evening to jungle lodges perched above river valleys. This is where a luxury Belize vacation begins to feel genuinely different from anywhere else on earth.
Ambergris Caye & the Barrier Reef

A short flight from the mainland deposits you onto Ambergris Caye — a palm-lined island where the pace drops immediately and the reef begins just offshore. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs the length of Belize’s coast, offering some of the finest snorkelling and diving in the western hemisphere: coral gardens, nurse sharks at Hol Chan, whale sharks at Gladden Spit between March and June. For the definitive aerial perspective, a scenic flight over the Great Blue Hole — a 300-metre-wide ocean sinkhole of extraordinary depth and colour — is the kind of experience that stays with you long after the trip ends.
Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve

An hour south of San Ignacio, the land rises into the Mountain Pine Ridge — a 300-square-mile reserve of granite hills, hidden waterfalls and pine forest that feels entirely apart from the coast below. This is where Belize’s finest jungle lodges sit: Gaia Riverlodge, perched on a tall ridge above the Five Sisters Waterfalls, is the standout. Walking trails disappear into the reserve in every direction; swimming holes fill beneath waterfalls that see almost no other visitors. It is the quietest, most private corner of Belize, and for that reason alone, the most memorable.

A luxury Belize vacation works best over 8 to 13 nights — enough time to experience both the jungle interior and the Caribbean cayes without feeling rushed. A 9-night trip might combine the Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, the ancient Mayan ruins of Xunantunich, and three nights on Ambergris Caye above the barrier reef. Extending to 13 nights opens up a Guatemala extension. Your Black Tomato expert will design the routing so every transfer feels like part of the experience.
