A Journey into Morocco

At the gateway to Africa, Morocco bears all the marks of its long and storied history – of Islamic empires and French protectorates, of bohemian wanderers and Berber pastoralists.

On this eye-popping journey, we’ll take you on a fulsome, breath-taking expedition through some of its most iconic sights and sites. The aromas of Jemaa el Fna, the peaks of Toukbal, the deserts of Agafay. Throughout, you’ll be led by some of the best and warmest guides that Morocco has to offer. Let’s begin.

Marrakech

All good things begin in Marrakech, the imperious, “ochre-walled” capital of Morocco. Seat of Almoravid emperors, UNESCO-inscribed medinas, and resplendent souks; bearing all the influences of its long and storied history. Senegalese traders, Andalusian princes, and galivanting bohemians who, during the long 1960s, found a welcome home among its souks, cafes, and quartiers. Now it’s your turn.

Day 1
Your arrival at the “ochre city”

Arriving at (the unusually lovely) Marrakech Menara Airport, you’ll be met by your private driver. They’ll ferry you to the heart of the ancient medina – and La Villa des Orangers, your exquisite home for three nights in the city. You’ll spend your first day and night settling in. Swimming beneath banana palms, dining in firelit riads, and indulging in an oh-so-Moroccan hammam treatment in the hotel’s spa.

Day 2
Of sidecars and souks

A labyrinth of souks, medinas, palaces, and museums, the best way to get to grips with Marrakech is by vintage sidecar and motorbike. Today, your guide (and driver) will take you on a whistle-stop tour of the city’s essential sights (and its off-grid enclaves). The old city, the date palm oasis of Palmeraie, and art deco Gueliz. Charging back into the medina, you’ll embark on a gutsy, gastronomic adventure with one of our expert guides; breezing past the tourist traps and eating where the real flavors are at.

Day 3
Something for the senses

You’ve had a taste of Moroccan cuisine; now it’s time to get into the kitchen. Today, you’ll team up with a ‘dada’ (a traditional cook). You’ll barter for ingredients as the souks come to life – and then you’ll head into a calm riad where you’ll learn the necessary arts. Lunch will be in a blissful, shaded courtyard. Sated, you’ll swap one oasis for another; making your way to the tucked-away Musee de Parfum to meet Amina, your perfumier, where you’ll enjoy a hands-on workshop where you’ll learn to create a unique scent of your own design; leaving with an intimate souvenir from your time in the city.

Day 4

The Agafay Desert

Sweeping, “desolate”, and Martian, the Agafay Desert – only 30km from the city of Marrakech – is best known for its startling views of the snow-slathered Atlas Mountains. You’d be right to think Dune (with apologies to Timothy Chalamet). It’s an unmissable playground for action, star-gazing, and fireside cookouts.

Day 4
Into the Desert

Leaving Marrakech behind, you’ll set off on a desert-buggy adventure into the sublime desolation of the Agafay; traversing remote tracks, dry riverbeds, and palm-shaded oases, you’ll pause for lunch at the aptly-named ‘la Pause’ – a desert camp nestled in the desert’s arid heart. When the dust has settled, we’ll take you to your very private, just-you camp – where you’ll be spending the night. Tents will be beautifully laid out with carpets, tables, chairs, beds and blankets. But the magic really begins at night: sitting beneath the stars in a camp illuminated by flickering candlelight, you’ll feel completely switched off from the rest of the world.

Days 5-6

The High Atlas Mountains

Stretching across the North African Maghreb, the Atlas Mountains – dominated by the looming massif of Mount Toukbal – are a sight to behold. For long centuries, these peaks – snow-clad, iron-tinted – have been the home of the Berber people. There’s a lot of life to be found here. And a lot of magic.

Day 5
A mountainous ascent

Waking at sunrise, you’ll watch as the light of early morning spreads across the desert landscape. After a traditional camp breakfast, you’ll head towards the High Atlas Mountains; discovering limestone peaks, cultivated valleys, high-altitude plateaus, and a vast ecosystem which includes Barbary macaques and Atlas cedars. Eventually, you’ll arrive at the welcome oasis of Kasbah Tamadot, your mountainous retreat for the next three nights. Here, you’ll have a chance to unwind; dining, relaxing at the spa, playing a game of tennis, or enjoying any number of activities in the foothills beyond.

Day 6
Trekking to Toukbal

Venturing deeper into the Atlas Mountains, we’ll take you to the foot of Morocco’s highest peak: Mount Toukbal. Rising 4,167 meters above sea level, this journey will (quite literally) take you to new heights. Lacing your boots, you’ll weave your way between local villages and valleys alongside one of our expert mountain guides. But high climbs and winding paths make for thirsty work. That’s why, in the small village of Tamatert, we’ll arrange for a traditional lunch of home-cooked tagine served between jagged mountains and clear skies.

Day 7
A mountain for your playground

On your penultimate day in Morocco, you can do as much (or as little) as you wish. You could relax by the outdoor infinity pool or you could join the hotel’s chefs for a hands-on cooking session and learn how to make some of Kasbah Tamadot’s most popular dishes. You could hike, bike, or play tennis. And then there’s the artisan workshops of the Eve Branson Foundation: a non-profit organisation working with local communities to preserve traditional crafts like woodwork and weaving.

Day 8
A fond farewell

Leaving is never easy. But, making your way through the mountainous, sunlit gradients of the Atlas Mountains and back to Marrakech, we can’t help but think you’ll be back. And soon.

So, ready to start?
