Belmond Governor’s Residence

Situated in the former capital of Yangon, the Belmond Governor’s Residence wouldn’t look out of place if it was transported back to the time when the city still ruled. This boutique hotel is set amongst tropical gardens speckled with lotus pools and its 48 rooms are brimming with character. Location

The Belmond Governor’s Residence is situated in the classy Embassy Quarter in the east of Yangon. Just half an hour away from the airport and ten minutes from the city center the hotel couldn’t be better located for those who want to see all of Yangon’s cultural attractions. Spend the day marvelling at the Shwedagon pagoda built with over 8,000 solid gold slabs, poring over the delights of the Bogyoke and Mingalar markets or discover the sceneries of the city’s waterways on a sunset cruise.

With carved teak furniture, local silk bed linen and hardwood floors the timeless style of these hotel rooms means you’ll never want to leave. There’s a choice of deluxe rooms, governors rooms and suites each which look out onto the courtyard or pretty lotus gardens. We can’t resist the charms of the local patterned cushions and silk panelled doors that feature in the Governor’s rooms, luckily there’s a boutique gift shop on site if you get too attached.

Why we like it?

The Belmond Governor’s residence is a peaceful retreat in such an exotic, buzzing city. The huge array of food and restaurants at this hotel are a real winner for us too. Head to the open air Mindon Lounge for a refreshing drink at sunset, then sample an array of local delicacies by lantern light at the Burmese Curry Table. If you’ve fallen in love with the exciting flavors then you can also go on a market tour with one of the chefs, where you learn about the ingredients that make up Myanmar gastronomy and are taught how to make a traditional spicy salad.
