The Oyster Box, Durban

The Oyster Box is one of our favorite South African boltholes with a soul-soothing spit on the seaside. The hotel itself has classic colonial charm and unrivalled views of the famous Umhlanga lighthouse, which are best enjoyed as you sip a cocktail by the poolside.

Location

Whether you’re on a mission to soak up some rays on the beach, want to explore city life in Durban or simply immerse yourself in traditional South African adventures, the hotel’s location means that you have plenty of options. The beach is on your doorstep whilst just a five-minute walk takes you into the town of Umhlanga where you’ll find a choice of restaurants, cafes and shops. A 25-minute drive brings you to Durban’s buzzing city center, and if you want to get close to nature? Then the stunning Drakensberg Mountains and variety of game parks are within easy reach too.

Your Room

The Oyster Box is home to 86 beautifully decorated rooms, each reflecting the hotel’s colonial flair. Choose between a sea-facing room or one of the luxurious spacious suites, in all you will find furnishings and tiling from the original hotel building, adding to the historical charm. The rooms and suites are all brightly decorated and have their own balconies, so you can sit back and look out at the ocean.

Why We Like It

An idyllic location and sumptuous interiors are both alluring features, but we love the fact the Oyster Box also offers a wonderful Dinner Dance. This famous weekly event has been hosted by the same Maitre D’ since 1963 and sees locals from across Durban settling down for a delicious four-course meal before dancing the night away to a live band. Expect an evening of true elegance.
