How long

6 nights ideal length

Fanned out to the east of Stockholm, 30,000 islands, skerries and rocks make their home in the Baltic Sea. A weekend hangout of the Swedish jet-set, the best way to see skärgården, as it’s known to the locals, is without a doubt from the water. Out on these waters, plenty of ferries and sailboats will be seen bobbing on by, but we’ll have you doing things a little differently – naturally. Spend a week out on the archipelago, splitting your time evenly between time on land and at sea, as you embark on a four-day sailing masterclass through the outer archipelago to explore the untouched and the unexplored islands far from the madding crowds of summer. Once you’ve mastered the ropes, you’ll dock in Stockholm to spend your final few days cruising like royalty and discovering the thriving archipelago art scene. Anchors up, it’s time to set sail.

Hoist the Sails

Flying into Stockholm, you’ll be whisked straight off to Waxholm Harbor where your classroom for the next few days awaits; a 24-foot Diva SC Sailing Yacht. The pick of the pack for training and speed sailing, yet easy to handle and with a comfortable cockpit, you’ll feel at home behind the wheel in no time. Showing you the ropes, you’ll have a private skipper by your side for the next few days, but as for the crew? That’s down to you. So hoist the sails and set your course out of Waxholm, past Resaro and onto Grinda; your first island escape awaits.

Start Planning

A sundrenched freckle on the horizon, Grinda is Stockholm’s favorite summer getaway. Full of natural beauty and stunning spots in which to dip a toe in the calm waters, moor up here and relax over dinner at the pier restaurant before resting up at the charming Wardhus. Tomorrow it’s back out to sea as you hone what you learned the day before in a day sailing around the archipelago’s quieter waters. Soak up the sun and stop off for lunch on one of the islands, before continuing out into the far reaches of the archipelago to Sandhamn. A world away from the green isles of the interior, Sandham is an altogether wilder story cut across by the sand dunes that give it its name and sprinkled with bare rocks and swathes of white sand beaches. It’s a beautiful spot and a welcome sight after a day on the water. Settle into your hotel at Sandham Seglarhotell and savor some of the finest seafood on the island.

Coming into Port

After a night spent on Sandhamn and another day navigating Swedish waters, you’ll come into port, mooring up expertly, in Stockholm. Disembark and swap your nautical home for something altogether chicer as you check into the Lydmar Hotel. The archipelago is never far away though, with waterfront views in all directions from the city’s hippest address. Drop your bags before setting out to get to know the city on a private walking tour of the Old Town. Swap the straits of the archipelago for narrow cobblestoned streets as you make your way up to the Cathedral, into the Nobel Museum and onto the Royal Palace, absorbing the atmosphere of the city every step of the way.

Illustrious Waters

For your final few days, we thought it only fair that we let someone else do the hard work as you set sail once more on a private cruise to Drottningholm Castle. The summer home of the Swedish royal family, we’ve got you exclusive access to marvel at the intricate architecture and magnificent gardens on a private tour taking in everything from the Palace Theater to the Chinese Pavilion. After, you’ll take lunch on the high seas as you sail through the idyllic landscapes of this part of the archipelago and onto picturesque Riddarfjarden and Lake Malaren.

Your final day in the archipelago takes a creative turn as you sail out to visit Artipelag, a cultural landmark dedicated to arts stemming from the archipelago. A private guide will talk you through everything from the photography exhibits to the art installations before you sail onto Lidingo for a behind the scenes take on the art world with a private tour of the Millesgarden’s Artist Home, built by sculptor Carl Milles in 1908 and now home to a fantastic sculpture garden and gallery. After one last waterfront lunch on Saltsjobaden, it’s time to disembark one last time as you prepare to return home the next morning, with not just a host of fantastic experiences under your belt, but a new skill too.
