They say you need to get lost to find yourself. And the Alaskan wilderness is the perfect place to do so. Within America’s ‘Last Frontier’, this trip will take you into the wild heart of the north. Mighty Spencer Iceberg, the boreal forests, the Kenai Fjords, between the rugged peaks of the Chugach Mountains and Great Sitkin volcano. Let’s begin.

One Week to Wander, Black Tomato

Days 1-3

Icy chills and rafting thrills

Stay

Your base, for the next three nights, is Alyeska Resort – a chalet-style hotel tucked away in a valley of the Chugach mountains. From here you’ll be perfectly placed to explore the Alaskan wilderness – hanging glaciers and all.

See

People come to Alaska for adventure. To explore the huge, breath-taking beyond. And today, it’s all about gushing rivers and icy lakes. Rafting down the Placer River, weaving through the icebergs at Spencer Lake. This place will give you chills. The good kind.

Days 3-7

Seek out grizzlies amid the wild

Stay

When it comes to remote wilderness, Tutka Bay Lodge has it in abundance. Sitting comfortably at the head of Kachemak Bay’s rugged seven-mile fjord, you’ll have the whole landscape – its mountains, beaches, sprawling green forests – at your fingertips. You’ll be itching to begin.

See

Stay still and don’t make a sound. Landing on a remote beach along the bay, you’ll watch coastal brown bears graze along the shoreline and forage for food in sedge grass fields. To get here, you’ll take to the skies, flying past giant glaciers and whales below – and at least seven active volcanoes. Yes, seven.
