Martha Walliss
Studying Spanish in Madrid. That’s how I got my first taste of living overseas. And Madrid quickly turned into Southeast Asia – where I backpacked. But my journey into travel didn’t follow a particularly straight path; spending some time working in tech, where I always sensed that something was missing. Eventually, I ended up living in Sri Lanka – and this is where I found the missing part: connecting with new people, and new places, in a location that felt both so different and so familiar at the same time.
For me, thoughtfulness is the most important thing. Perhaps that’s something you learn when you set off to live in another country. Little gestures, being present, listening carefully: all these things are close to my heart – and it’s something that I get to practice every day as a Client Relations Executive at Black Tomato. After all, we’re here to remember the ‘little’ details that mean the world to you; like remembering that you’re celebrating an anniversary or passing mentions of a cherished childhood memory that we can bring to life. Thoughtfulness builds trust, and genuine connections; and that’s really our guiding light.
"travel can exceed even our highest expectations"
A closer look at MexicoMexico has given me some of my most vivid travel memories. Floating down Xochimilco’s canals, dancing with complete strangers to mariachi music, mezcalita in hand: all those perfect, unscripted moments that remind you why we travel. But it was experiencing Día de los Muertos that truly captured my imagination. After Halloween in Mexico City’s streets, I journeyed to Oaxaca where the festival unfolded exactly as I’d dreamed; where the streets come alive with intricate costumes, face paint, and a celebration that honors both life and death. I couldn’t resist joining in; getting my own face painted to fully immerse myself in this incredible tradition. These experiences remind me how travel can exceed even our highest expectations, creating moments that stay with us long after we return home.
