Sam Miller
I started out working in film production and commercial real estate: two worlds that taught me how to bring big ideas to life while staying grounded in the detail. As time went by, I gravitated toward storytelling – and found myself angling to work in the very human world of travel. What’s more, as a big fan of cooking, wine, snowboarding, and cinema – it’s my aim to watch as many films in as many cinemas around the world – my tastes have inevitably taken me out of the house.
I’ve always been driven by a sense of curiosity – and I love thinking about the daily lives of people on the other side of the world: their rhythms, rituals, and resourcefulness. At Black Tomato, I get to spend my days connecting clients with these other people – and their ways of life. Here, creativity and storytelling are valued as much as logistics – and that’s something that means a lot to me.
'I stayed with a family of herders in a remote mountain valley'
A closer look at MongoliaIn Mongolia, I stayed with a family of herders in a remote mountain valley. As a thank you for hosting me, I offered to buy one of their goats so we could make a khorkhog: Mongolia’s version of a barbecue, where the meat is cooked with hot stones in an subway pit. It was an incredible feast; smoky and celebratory. Though I quickly realized I’d set myself up for two straight weeks of eating goat in every imaginable form; from dumplings to stews to even a surprisingly good goat tea.
