Kokkedal Castle, Copenhagen

It might look like something out of a fairy-tale, but careful and sensitive refurbishment has brought this dazzling 18th century castle property on the Danish Riviera very much to life. Marrying contemporary comfort with regal resplendence, this idyllic countryside retreat is certainly magical – not mythical.

LOCATION

Just 30 minutes north of Copenhagen, Kokkedal is well-placed as a perfect rural getaway. The verdant estate sits on a stunning stretch of coastline in the heart of the royal North Sealand area, surrounded by the rolling Danish countryside. The historic city center is easily accessible by car or train, and there are plenty of cultural attractions on the doorstep: the Museum of Modern Art, Museum Nivaagaard & Karen Blixen Museum are all within 10km of the hotel. The city of Helsingør – home to Kronborg Castle and the Danish Maritime Museum – is 20km further north. The journey to the airport takes less than one hour.

YOUR ROOM

The castle has 62 rooms, divided between the castle (Deluxe, Executive, and Junior Suites) and the old castle lodge (Superior). Each room is bright and spacious with excellent views of the castle gardens. In-keeping with the rural and the royal, the décor takes inspiration from the natural surroundings, and the charming rustic bathrooms featuring appropriate period features add to the aristocratic authenticity (and the luxury restroomries are a welcome modern addition). TV and wireless internet come as standard in all rooms. Elsewhere in the castle, interior designers of international repute have left their mark, from the Bohemian crystal chandeliers to the Ballroom curtains.

WHY WE LIKE IT

Kokkedal Castle is opulent, but not extravagant; intimate, but not intimidating. The careful restoration and redesign has brought a suitably modern touch to the estate without compromising its unique heritage, creating a well-balanced ambience that does not hang on unnecessary pomp and circumstance. Amenities such as the fabulous spa (the first in Scandinavia to feature the world-renowned Sodashi range of products) and the beautiful 18-hole golf course improve, rather than impact, the historic setting.  The highly professional staff have been retrained towards creating a unique and individual experience for each visitor – instead of the usual front desk desk, hosts and hostesses personally welcome guests on arrival and remain on hand to arrange or recommend local excursions or meet specific requirements. In short, a stay at Kokkedal Castle really is fit for any king or queen.
