The Wonders of France

The movies – care of the industrious Lumière brothers – were invented in France. Perhaps that’s why we know it so well – and so visually. The Eiffel Tower, the Champs-Élysées, fields of lavender, the sun-hot shores of the south. There’s an immediately memorable image here; hold it in your mind. With this new itinerary (which, bien sûr, you can tailor any way you like), we wanted to take a long, lingering look at all the things that make France, well, so particularly French. The resulting trip is a marvel to behold – taking you on an elegant voyage through the country’s most breathless sights. North to South – from city to coast. Think of this one as elegant, uplifting, and so very easygoing.

Paris

If “Paris syndrome” describes the sensitive shock that some travelers feel when landing in the city of lights, then we want to offer the “Paris cure”: a vision of the city that swings and sways with everything you’d hope from the capital that has played host to writers, poets, and painters for long and exquisite centuries.

Day 1
Get your bearings along the Avenue de l’Opéra

First things first, welcome to France. Today, we’ll be getting you settled in at the Hotel Nolinski – a confidently cool hotel on the Avenue de l’Opéra. Its elegant interiors – all moody blues and emerald hues – come from the brain of Jean-Louis Deniot. Compact, cultured, and calm, this is really the perfect place to make your temporary Parisian home.

Day 2
Da Vinci, de Milo, and Delacroix

Today is really about the Louvre, albeit skipping the queue. Stepping into its legendary, pyramidal courtyard, we’ll take you on a private tour through centuries of oil, stone, canvas, and impasto, peeling back the paint (figuratively speaking, that is) on the stories behind the museum’s most iconic works.

Head spinning from all that artistic vision, you’ll have an afternoon to pad about the Ile de la Cité – the beating heart of historic Paris. Notre-Dame is a must, as is some bookish burrowing through Shakespeare & Sons (one of the city’s most beloved bookstores). We’ll point you in the right direction so far as cafes, boulangeries, and bistros go.

Day 3
From Saint-Germaine to Montmartre

Today, your driver will take you to Saint-Germain-des-Prés – the historic heartland of France’s intellectual and artistic big-whigs. You’ll duck into the bookstores, boutiques, jazz clubs, restaurants, and cafes that give the area its irrepressible elan.

Later, you’ll see a different side of the city; taking a stroll through the elegantly elevated Montmartre neighborhood; a favorite among artists seeking a bird’s eye view. Taking a skyline snap here might seem obvious, but it’s really hard to resist. Go for it. Later still, as the sun begins to set, we’ll ferry you along the Seine on a private boat with some very cushy banquettes (and a bottle of champagne, of course).

Day 4
A visit to Versailles

Once upon a time, Versailles was a but a humble hunting lodge. It was only later that it became the eye-popping place of majesty that it is today. Being the opulent home of the ancien régime and overthrown kings, a day spent here can leave you whirling from grandeur and excess. Fortunately, the gardens offer a tranquil place to put it all in perspective.

Back in the city, you’ll have the option to do some shopping in the Opera district. Very tempting.

Days 5-7

Avignon and Crillon le Brave

Avignon. The Rhône runs through it, yes, but so does the whole story of southeastern France. The Palais des Papes, the Pont Saint-Bénézet, the cathedral that towers over everything. Such bliss, such beauty. But we’re going to be taking you further afield, still; into the villages and landscapes of lovely Luberon – one of France’s most seductively secretive wine regions.

Day 5
Heading south

First class in the TGV – it’s a rushing treat. We’re going to be taking you via Avignon to Crillon le Brave – a tiny, tumbling village with a lot of joi-de-vivre. The hidden-away Hotel Crillon le Brave will be your base for the next few days.

While in Crillon, you’ll be able to drink up the magnifique magic of this blissfully laidback place; with its chapels, vineyards, wine estates, hiking, cycling, and horse-riding. Whatever you want, we’ll set it up.

Day 6
The villages of Luberon

It’s hard to understand how Luberon has been so overlooked – and for so long. But that might be its quintessential charm. Here, in a vast UNESCO-listed nature reserve, you’ll find a simply stunning vista of rolling hills, limestone mountains, orchards, farms, and forested valleys. We’re going to be taking you around and about, including the hilltop village of Gordes which, famously, overlooks great purple plains of billowing lavender. There’ll be time for lunch, strolling, sightseeing, galleries, and shopping. All easy-going, all at leisure.

Day 7
All about Avignon

You swept through Avignon; now you’ll make your return. Home to one of the largest gothic palaces in Europe, the city has history like Manhattan has skyscrapers. Your guide is going to take you to the city’s market, too; giving you the chance to line your stomach before meeting up with a local sommelier to work your way through some of Avignon’s most famous grapes (we’re talking about Chateauneuf-de-Pape, of course).

When the day is done, we’ll speed you back to your happy home in Crillon.

Days 8-11

Monaco & Nice

Plunging further south and east, we’re about to drop you into the glad-hearted Mediterranean that makes this part of the world so special. The French Riviera – for good reason – has been attracting movie stars and aristocrats to its shores for a very long time – and for very good reason. Call it R’n’R; call it old-world glamor. Happily, you’ll be making your home at the Hôtel du Couvent – a converted 17th century convent that, with its understated looks and apricot-tree gardens, strikes a confidently calm note in the very heart of the coast.

Day 8
The pearl of the French riviera

Today, we’ll be making you on your way to Nice – the “pearl” of the French Riviera. With its great, soaring hills and chalkily elegant look and feel, this’s a very good reason why this opulent city has become the byword for Mediterranean beauty. For us, there’s no more perfect way to introduce yourself to the city than to stroll the promenade des Anglais (which well-heeled travelers have been doing since the 19th century) and to scale the Colline du Château, which is perhaps better known as “the cradle of the sun”.

Day 9
Making your way to Monaco

Today, you’ll be making tracks for Monaco – the famously elegant, pocket-sized city-state along France’s southeastern coastline. For you, this means taking in the Prince’s Palace, Port Hercule, and the Monte Carlo Casino.

Later, we’ll bring you higher to the village of La Turbie – famous for its history of hosting cycling and vehicle races since 1897 – followed by a visit to the exotic, medieval gardens of Èze, prickly with cacti and agave, some 427 meters above the glittering Mediterranean.

By night, there’ll be a decorous dinner back in the heart of historic Nice.

Day 10
“Nice la Belle”

Today, you’ll have time at leisure to soak up the museums, galleries, markets, and architecture that have made Nice such an enduring destination for so many centuries. Visits to the Musée Matisse and the Musée Marc Chagall – for those artistically inclined – are strongly recommended. There’s a reason it’s known as “Nice la Belle”, after all.

Day 11
The End

A final day on the Côte d’Azur will bring your Francophile odyssey to an end. You’ll have time for a last, leisurely breakfast at the Hôtel du Couvent before flying home from one of the most glorious places on earth.
