Adventure into the Himalayas
For us, the concept of the village walks is to facilitate an authentic ‘underfoot’ experience and provide a ‘snapshot’ of rural life in the Himalayan Mountains of Uttaranchal. The walks traverse the terraced foothills with overnight ‘home stays’ in various villages where accommodations is basic, although clean and comfortable, but does not detract from the authenticity of the experience – the genuine warmth of your hosts more than compensates for any shortcomings. Setting off from the road head on the Kasar Devi Ridge, you will begin by walking down through various villages, following meandering streams through the valleys and traversing around the hills of pine forests. After two nights in Uttaranchal you will venture further to Shakti 360 Leti, a stunning camp sitting high on a precipice with majestic 360 degree views of lush mountainous landscapes and snow-capped peaks. Getting to Shakti 360 Leti is not for the faint-hearted. You’ll face seven hours of hairpin driving through steep mountains, followed by a one-and-a-half-hour trek along a narrow trail that clings to the face of a plunging cliff. Your travels are well rewarded, however, for occupying a small plateau 8,000 feet above sea level, 360° Leti basks in spectacular panoramic views.
Built with local materials and age-old techniques, the camp blends aesthetically with its surroundings, creating a harmonious and peaceful environment. It’s the height of luxury with an authentic Himalayan feel. Until recently just a collection of tents, the camp is now an ensemble of stone, glass, and wood structures that draw on solar power and mountain water. Each of the four cottages is sited for privacy and knockout views that can also be enjoyed from a private terrace with a fire pit and family-style meals are accompanied in the evening with fine wine. A day hike brings you rare views of Nanda Devi, one of the world’s highest mountains, or you can swim beneath a waterfall of pure Himalayan water.
