Amanjiwo, Java
Inspired by the ancient temples of the Amanjiwo Valley, Amanjiwo is a spectacularly luxurious hotel which still remains spiritual and true to its striking surroundings. Whether you are taking time-out by the pool, sipping cocktails in the Rotunda Bar or enjoying the privacy and serenity of your suite, the views are all-around out of this world.
Location
The most important island in the world’s largest archipelago, Java is at the heart of Indonesian culture and commerce. Amanjiwo is a one-hour transfer from the main city of Yogyakarta, or two hours on the more scenic route, passing by a number of large volcanoes, from Solo. Set in an incredible location, you’ll be surrounded by aromatic coffee plantations and engulfed by mountains. Better still, look out from your room and you’ll be able to see the incredible Borobudur temple. Spend your days out on amazing mountain treks past molten lava fields, energetic elephant rides and jungle hikes. Be sure to check out the local handicrafts too, Yogyakarta is the home of batik, traditional wayang puppets, sculpture and silverware.
Your room
Amanjiwo’s 34 suites are designed in two deep semi-circular formations with soaring limestone walls, covered with lilies and mauve & cream convolvulus that grow on the stone paths linking the suites and the pool club. Inside your suites, you’ll find an impressive four-poster bed on a raised platform, topped with crisp white sheets and downy plume pillows that will no doubt have you sleeping like a baby. Local materials and artifacts such as coconut wood, hand carved fixtures, striking Javanese textiles and traditional glass paintings add local elegance whilst sliding glass doors open out onto garden terraces with impressive views and a thatched pavilion that makes the ideal spot for private dining.
Why we like it
We love indulging in the assortment of traditional Javanese beauty treatments available here. Incorporating the ancient holistic jamu technique of healing, these treatments can be enjoyed in the privacy of guest suites or in the specially designed Spa Suite, which has twin massage tables and an outdoor bale.
