A City Kid’s California

Exploring the colorful city of California

California is home to some of the United States’ most diverse, colorful and interesting cities. Whether you’re looking for a short city break, a place to rest your head on a west coast stop over or a base from which to explore the state’s beaches, vineyards and national parks, the cities of Cali will always leave you wanting more.

Los Angeles

So many people are enamoured by the glitz and glamor of Hollywood, and we can see why when we visit LA. Peruse the high end shops of Rodeo Drive, spot your favorite celeb’s name on the Hollywood Walk of Fame or take a spin on Santa Monica’s Ferris wheel, there’s fun to be had for all ages in La-La Land.

Looking to steer away from the run-of-the-mill spots? Forget hiking to the Hollywood sign, instead head out to Malibu and meander up Corral Canyon for a stunning sea view.

If you’re finding the crowds at popular Santa Monica beach a bit overwhelming, take a trip to Venice beach, home to all things weird and wonderful.

San Francisco

The hedonistic and hilly San Francisco is arguably one of the U.S.’s most exciting and lively cities. Home of 1950s counter-culture, with technology moguls out in Silicon Valley and glorious drag queens in Castro, San Fran is an unusual paradox of intense intellect and colorful creativity.

Stay in the stylish Hotel Zetta just around the corner from Union Square and pass away the hours riding the city’s world-famous streetcars before watching the sun go down behind the Painted Ladies on Alamo Square.

Combine a trip to San Fran with a visit to the nearby wine tasting regions of Napa and Sonoma or to Yosemite for a bit of countryside beauty. We have yet to meet someone who has been to San Fran and not loved every second.

San Diego

Looking for a city break that the kids will love too? The friendly city of San Diego in southern Cali is the place to go.

The gorgeous beaches make for a relaxed summer day of family bonding with surf lessons and kayaking tours to amuse all. Perhaps your family is not so into water sports?

Spend a day exploring what makes San Diego famous, its zoo, before thrilling your kids (and probably you too) on Belmont Park’s Giant Dipper. Then head into the city’s Old Town to feast on tasty Mexican cuisine.
