The Taj Tashi is a glittering blend of Bhutanese design with contemporary elegance, fine pampering and indigenous kingdom-magic. Cradled in the charming capital of Thimpu, the hotel offers fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and Thimpu valley, wonderfully treasuring the charisma and artistic sensibility that is Bhutan.
Thimpu – chalk-white chortens, bustling markets, culinary delights, and ancient dzongs – compacts a lot into a surprisingly small space. It’s an intriguing place and, even more interestingly, on the cusp of change. The heart of Bhutan, home to the magnificent Tashichho Dzong, and center of all political and religious activity, make this city your next cosmopolitan stop. Thimpu (and the Taj Tashi) is only a quick one hour drive from Paro airport.
Spacious, luxurious rooms capture the essence of Bhutanese art and design with a contemporary twist. In a theatrical type way, rooms are adorned with blue pine, Spanish marble, and exotic Bhutanese rugs and Thai silks. Luxuries include under floor heating, a walk-in shower, and a gigantic soaking tub – there’s barely any need to turn on the flat screen. Boudoir bliss.
Why we like it
Outside Taj Tashi, the hustle and bustle of Thimpu may be a little overwhelming, but inside it’s soothingly calm. There’s a golf course, an Iva Spa specialising in ancient Indian healing traditions, and a medley of restaurants and bars. In the evenings, Taj Tashi whirls with song and dance with traditional Bhutanese performers. And with glistening stars, a roaring fire, and the spectacular view, what more could you possibly ask for.
