Bhutan Highlights

A country shrouded in mystery, surrounded by the majestic snow-capped Himalayas, and untouched by the rest of the world, breathe in Bhutan’s beauty; our intrepid answer to stressed out city living.

Spiritually enlightening and as remote as they come, Bhutan is a mountain kingdom the world is just turning its attention to. It’s a country preserved in time and space, where ornate stupas, traditional dress, yak herders, and five dominant valleys are still reigning over modernity. Whether interested in a culture immersion or seeking an award-winning, holistic health retreat, Bhutan’s enticing people and unique landscape will have you meditating under the Himalayas and trekking to camps only accessible by foot.

Formally referred to as Paro Taktsang, Tiger’s Nest is Bhutan’s most recognizable temple site. Dramatically located cliffside in the Paro Valley, this Buddhist structure dates back to the 1640’s and still functions as a monastery today. A first time trip to Bhutan without completing the five-hour trek to Tiger’s Nest would simply be lackluster – especially with the help of our on-site guide who’s prepared to delve deep into this sites wonder and history.

We’re speaking from experience when we say Paro is the unmissable destination on any Bhutan itinerary. The Himalayas are flanked my lush meadows and ice-cold rivers and the culture takes pride in it’s holy connection with the surrounding land. Paro is a destination to reset your outlook and slow down your pace, starting each morning with private yoga sessions and ending each evening with a guided meditation. Fret not, personalized massages and treks to isolated temples will fill the hours in-between.

Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, is the only world capital still traffic light free. It’s a city to take in the local people practicing their national sport of archery and to watch the monks dressed in ruby robes go about their business. It’s small but mighty – traditional and yet progressive, and at a juxtaposition of the old and the new. Visit the handicraft weekend market for a souvenir or two before heading to one of the country’s most splendid dzongs, Trashi Chho.

Reminiscent of local temples and religious sites, the detail tangible from property to property speaks to the spirit, talent, and authenticity so abundant in Bhutan. Head to the mountains for a sliver of Himalayan hospitality or stick to the valleys for a room that opens to quaint rice paddies and running rivers.

For a mountain vacation unlike any other, retreat to one of the award-winning properties that hug the stunning Himayalas. Disconnect from the hectic and take in the sights from an elevated altitude at Gangtey Lodge or Como Uma Paro. Both of these properties are known for their therapeutic properties and connection to the rejuvenating surroundings. Start the day as you mean to go on, focusing on the health of mind, body, and soul.

While some properties are the gateway to the Himalayas, others act as the lense into life in the countryside. Sanctuaries and lodges help guests achieve restoration amongst towering pines and twisting rivers, beautiful dzongs and hilltop chortens. Utilize the Amankora Paro as your launching point to the valley’s historical sights and religious landmarks, or get comfortable in Punakha with the help of Dhensa, a property that exudes the essence of Bhutan through innovative design and one of a kind luxury.
