Shinta Mani Mustang

Some places earn their reputation quietly. Shinta Mani Mustang is one of them — found in one of Nepal’s most remote and rarely visited regions. Shaped entirely by designer Bill Bensley’s singular vision, stone, slate, timber, and Tibetan textiles anchor the structure to the mountainside. Step inside, and bold color and handcrafted artistry take over. The ancient landscape is never far from view.

Location

Shinta Mani Mustang sits above the town of Jomsom — a well-positioned base for the lesser-known corners of Lower Mustang, a region closed to outsiders for several hundred years and largely untouched by tourism. Bordering Tibet, the area carries a deep Tibetan cultural identity: ancient monasteries, centuries-old villages, and a way of life that has changed little over millennia.

Getting here is part of the experience. A 30-minute mountain flight from Pokhara threads through the Kali Gandaki Gorge, the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges filling the plane windows. Those with more time can take the overland route from Pokhara — around six to eight hours by private jeep, and worth every one of them.

Your Room

The retreat’s 29 suites channel the spirit of a traditional Tibetan home, with an open-plan layout that dissolves the boundary between bedroom and living space. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the Nilgiri range — an easy place to lose an hour — while the interiors hold their own drama: handmade Tibetan rugs, bold colors drawn from local art, carved wooden furnishings, and blankets woven from Mongolian cashmere. Locally sourced stone, slate, and natural fabrics bring warmth throughout, while curated antiques and upcycled pieces give each room genuine character.

Who It Suits

The experience here is decidedly grown-up — built around moving through the world at your own pace. Adventurers find their fill in horse riding, monastery visits, mountain biking, and multi-day treks, all with private guides who tailor every activity to your interests and fitness level. This is not a place for the restless. It rewards those who favor depth over distance.

Why We Like It

Few places anywhere can claim a setting this dramatic, or experiences this rare. Guided treks lead through the 800-year-old Bon Buddhist settlement of Lubra Village, across suspension bridges to ancient Jhong, and into monasteries where butter lamps have burned for centuries. Then there’s the SoRig Wellness Center: a beautifully appointed spa overlooking the Nilgiri range, where the centerpiece is a private consultation with Tsewang Gyurme Gurung — the resort’s 11th-generation Amchi — who prescribes personalized treatments rooted in centuries of Tibetan medicine.

Sustainability

Shinta Mani Mustang was built primarily from locally sourced stone, slate, and wood, with passive solar design and extensive insulation keeping energy consumption low. Solar power, a sustainable wastewater system that nourishes four hectares of apple and apricot orchards, and a farm-to-forager dining philosophy carry that same commitment through daily operations. Revenues support the Pasang Lhamu Foundation — a non-profit established in honor of Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to summit Everest — which funds education, vocational training, and healthcare for women from remote mountain communities.
