Palacio Ludovice, Lisbon
More than a hotel, Palacio Ludovice is a historical landmark, the former private residence of João Federico Ludovice, who was the esteemed architect to King João V in the 18th century. It’s been painstakingly resorted to create a sumptuous city stay of 61 rooms and suites, with original stuccoed and frescoed ceilings, plus original blue and white tiles, still used throughout. Wine is central to a stay here – whether it’s in the serene Caudalie Vinothérapie Spa or a wine tasting experience beneath the ancient vaulted brick ceiling of the cozy bar. Raise a glass and enjoy.
LOCATION
The former palace sits in a perfect spot where the buzzy neighborhoods of Chiado, Bairro Alto, and Principe Real meet. Throw back the curtains and you’ll see the São Pedro de Alcântara viewpoint, with its far-reaching views across the terracotta rooftops that Lisbon has become so famous for.
YOUR ROOM
Supremely comfortable, undeniably luxurious – these rooms are the perfect retreat after a long day of sightseeing or a long night of drinking, eating and – should the city’s bars take hold – dancing. Luxurious linens in corals and soft blues drape the beds, with fun statement lampshades in banana yellows and deep reds. Matt gold taps, white marbles, and cornflower-blue tiles and rain showers make bathrooms feel like their own spa sanctuary. Opt for city skyline or leafy courtyard views – you won’t be disappointed with either.
WHO IT SUITS
Anyone with an appreciation for history, great design, and delicious wine. Families are thoughtfully catered for, and there are handy sofa beds in some of the suites.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Location, design, and a deep connection to Portuguese culture are some of the reasons we love it. The five-course dinner at Federico is the perfect easy evening out, followed by drinks in an ancient vault, an excellent night’s sleep and a buffet breakfast of local cheeses, hams, and fruits the following day. City hotel spas can often be an afterthought, but hard-working CAUDALIE products, made with natural grapevine extracts, promise to enrich and nourish the skin.
SUSTAINABILITY
There’s a big focus on showcasing local producers, whether it’s the wine you drink or the cheese you taste at breakfast. Guests are encouraged to be mindful about the use of plastics, towels and so on during their stay, but not in a way that compromises on the luxurious experience.
