When it first opened in the late sixties, this beautifully located resort immediately became a popular escape for Hollywood stars –John Wayne and the Rat Pack as just a couple that we’ll name drop. Many well-heeled folk have since passed through its doors and today, after a full renovation, it remains a much-loved, family-run retreat in Mammoth Lakes. And if the resort and its surrounding area weren’t enough of an escape, they also have a blissfully zen spa where you can indulge in treatments for the ultimate restorative break.
The Sierra Nevada Resort & Spa is set in the heart of Mammoth Lakes, an easy stroll from stores and restaurants in the area, or a short drive to the lakes, ski slopes and other key local landmarks, such as Devil’s Postpile. You are just 12 miles from Mammoth Yosemite Airport, where you can catch internal flights, or a few hours beautiful drive from San Francisco, LA and Death Valley.
Whether you go for a chalet, a deluxe room or a fireplace suite, your abode will be full of the rustic charm that is synonymous with this area. Think alpine wood, rich colors and cozy rugs – but all laced with the luxury you’d expect. After a day exploring the lush, ever-green landscapes of Mammoth Lake, relax in front of the log fire in your suite, while you soak up the tranquillity of the resort.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The location of the resort is ideal (and we love the history that comes with it too), but the icing on the cake here has to be the gourmet cuisine on offer. There are three equally delicious restaurants, so you can choose between Greek, Asian or traditional North American food; and after each active day in Mammoth Lakes, believe us, you’ll be grateful for the feast.
