Time + Tide Mchenja Camp

With a grove of baboon filled ebony trees on one side and the Luangwa River on the other, Time + Tide Mchenja Camp is a remote Zambian Eden. The setting is so idyllic there’s no need for all the mod-cons – and why would you want them anyway? For they would only distract from the safari animals that wander through camp, meaning that top-notch game viewing is truly on your doorstep here. Mchenja offers an authentic, back-to-nature safari experience for those looking to disconnect and live in the moment and with just five luxurious tented suites, al fresco dining under the stars and a swimming pool, it’s one tranquil moment.

Mchenja Camp is on the banks of the Luangwa River in South Luangwa National Park, an area well-known for its fantastic game viewing. Even better, the river is the scene of many an elephant crossing, so expect to see some of the majestic creatures splashing about from your suite window during your stay. A scenic two and a half hour game drive from Mfuwe Airport through the South Luangwa National Park, your safari begins the moment you arrive with walking and driving safaris guaranteeing you see the best of Zambia’s wildlife.

Your room

The five luxurious tented suites all boast stunning views over the Luangwa River and a simple, elegant vibe that helps them blend into their beautiful surroundings. The outdoor bathrooms will bring you that bit closer to the region’s natural beauty, whilst sinking clawfoot tubs and sumptuous beds ensure you do it all in the utmost luxury. So sit back on your private terrace and simply admire the stunning Zambian sunset in the distance.

Why we like it

Mchenja is all about the simple pleasures, getting back to nature and disconnecting from the outside world. Rather than heading off to a swanky bar for a cocktail, the central chitenje is built around a fallen ebony tree. Instead of choosing between Michelin starred restaurants, you’ll dine beneath the stars on a table on the riverbank. Mchenja even lets you sleep out under the stars if you wish and that is what makes it so special. Mchenja proves that sometimes simplicity is better than opulence and that’s where its luxury lies.
