Singita Kwitonda Lodge, Volcanoes National Park

A unique feat of contemporary architecture, nestled amid the lush landscapes of Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, Singita Kwitonda Lodge is redefining the gorilla tracking experience. From the outside, you’d easily lose this luxury lodge within the landscape but all that changes on stepping inside. Whether it’s the eight suites, the outdoor firepit or the central hub, natural materials such as volcanic rock and river stone have been used to masterful effect in creating a striking design full of local touches, bright colors and luxurious undertones.

Location

Singita Kwitonda’s aim is a simple one – that, someday, when the Akarabo Nursery they’ve planted around themselves grows up, you’ll lose them to their surroundings. For now, you’ll find it just a stone’s throw from the Volcanoes National Park headquarters, meaning you’re perfectly located for gorilla tracking and golden monkey trekking. But if you’re itching to get to it? Skip the three-hour drive from capital Kigali, and instead opt for the 30-minute helicopter ride to the lodge.

Your room

At Singita Kwitonda the emphasis is placed firmly on the world around you and so, it only seems right that in each of the eight suites you’ll find huge picture windows opening onto views of Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura volcanoes. The suites are, in themselves, a feast for the senses too with bold colors and woven ceilings bringing to life that feeling of being in Africa, whilst indoor-outdoor showers and fireplaces and private plunge pools finish off the luxury experience.

Why we like it

Singita has always been firmly committed to the world around it and Kwitonda is no exception. There’s an onsite garden growing fresh, local produce as part of their dedication to farm-to-table cuisine. There’s Akarabo Nursery and its aim for the conservation of endangered mountain gorillas through reforestation. Then there’s also the team of inhouse conservationists to ensure that you leave this beautiful corner of the world with a passion to protect it.
