Spring break is the calm before the storm; a perfect time to whisk the family off for a sunny getaway before the summer crowds start flooding in. Cool temperatures and long sunny days, together with quiet beaches and peaceful hotels make for a great retreat for all the family to enjoy. The start of spring break depends on your region and state – most schools will break for summer vacation in March and April, with classes resuming after a week. We recommend checking the exact dates with your children’s school before booking.
Spring break typically lasts for a week depending on the school, region, and state – leaving nine days for a spring family vacation to remember. We like to try and book our flights on the Friday night to make the most of our vacation days. Of course, if you have children too old or young for school, make the most of March, April and May and get away whenever you like in the spring!

However, if you’re looking at May specifically, it’s an ideal time to visit Japan with its warmer weather when the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. For somewhere a little closer to home, Canada is another of our favorite destinations for family vacations in May. During spring, over 30 different whale species traverse the waters around Canada, marking the beginning of the prime whale watching season in the country.

Thailand’s hospitality is second-to-none, making it a top spring break destination for families with younger children, and what better way to experience Thailand in all its glory than during the warm weather of spring? Soak up the sun and make your way to Krabi and Phuket’s idyllic beaches with a bucket and spade for some family-bonding time. If you’re on the hunt for something to really get the little ones engaged, then why not head to Patara Elephant Farm in Chiang Mai where you can get up close with the gentle giants. Here, you and your little ones will play a part in Elephant Day Care, lending a hand to feeding and bathing the elephants, (don’t worry they’re not all huge) as you learn all about their day-to-day routines and the sanctuary they live in.

Versatile in experiences, it’s the perfect place for the older children to get immersed in the many markets of Marrakech and the tantalizing street food options. After a vintage sidecar tour of the souks, you’ll dive out of the hustle and bustle of Marrakech and find yourself deep in the Sahara Desert living your best safari life.
