Tawana, Moremi Game Reserve
Named in honor of Chief Tawana Moremi, Tawana is a contemporary luxury safari camp that feels rare and rooted in its surroundings. Deeply connected to the Batawana people, whose ancestors helped establish Moremi Game Reserve, this is a place that blends heritage, conservation, and community into every detail.
Located on the banks of the Gomoti River in Botswana’s Okavango Delta, days here are set by the wilderness. Dawn breaks over misted waterways, afternoons tune to birdsong, and nights open to constellations – so you can slow down, look up, and let the Delta reset your rhythm.
LOCATION
Tawana occupies the southeastern corner of Moremi National Park – the oldest protected land in the Okavango Delta – a short drive from Santawani airstrip. The landscape here shifts between winding channels, silver floodplains, and shady riverine groves – and you’ll track it on foot, by boat, or from a helicopter. Wildlife moves freely here – and often right through camp.
YOUR ROOM
Privacy and exclusivity come as standard at Tawana – with each of its eight suites sitting on a raised deck, shaded by ebony trees and looking out across the grasslands. Inside, contemporary Africa meets tactile luxury: sleek wood, soft fabrics, and thoughtful touches make returning from game drives feel like a reward in itself. Floor to ceiling glass doors bring the outside in – with an outdoor shower, plunge pool, and outdoor pavilion for blissed out afternoons and floodplain gazing. We particularly like the river-facing suites, for perfect golden hour light and waking up to birdsong.
WHO IT SUITS
Tawana works beautifully for anyone craving space, exceptional service, and storytelling. Families benefit from three family-friendly suite options and guides who know how to bring the wild to life for children – by way of gentle pacing, tailored drives, and real answers to endless questions. Couples will enjoy in-suite spa treatments and private dining, either candlelit by the river or on your own deck. Between safaris, there’s a 16-meter pool, a yoga pavilion, and a gym with a view to enjoy.
WHY WE LIKE IT
The guides at Tawana are part naturalists, part storytellers – and the whole team brings a warmth that turns days into the kind of memories that stick. The camp is unfenced, so the drama (and the quiet magic) stay close. Some of the best sightings happen from your deck: elephants wandering past, hippos wading in the river, the occasional lion padding across the floodplains. Add a helicopter flight for the full Delta panorama, then finish with a bush sundowner – amber light, a perfectly mixed gin and tonic, and that endless African horizon. You can even bake your own pizza in a disused termite mound for dinner. We’re not overselling it.
SUSTAINABILITY
Built in partnership with local tribal leadership, Tawana channels your stay into both community benefit and Delta protection. The camp is entirely solar powered, with low-impact structures made from local and recycled materials. Its conservation and education programs also reduce human-wildlife conflict, safeguard ecosystems, and support schools and livelihoods – helping to keep the Okavango wild, resilient, and shared.
